hi all, loking to return to caravaning, last van was a 2018 vigo, we decided to sell and have started to look at vans again, has any one owned one of the lunar clubmans, what do you think of the build quality? do they use the traditional method of construction?
im no expert on Lunar, but id steer clear of an obsolete manufacturer unless the price was a lot lower than other comparable age and spec vans.
I dont think Lunar ever has a great reputation, they cant have gained the nic name "leaky lunar" for nothing.
You are quite right there mikouk, you ARE no expert on Lunar!
The 'legend' of 'Leaky Lunars' dates back nearly 30 years to former Dutch owners who let QC drop for a short while, the management buyout in 2007 returned quality to as good as any in the industry, and arguably better than some! There are 'legends' about 'Soggy Swifts and 'Boggy Baileys' too, and on much newer vans! And your Adria brand vans don't escape criticism from dissatisfied owners either! - it's only the relatively low numbers compared to other brands in UK that keep the comments proportionately rare!
There's little reason to avoid defunct manufacturers any more than any brand van more than a few years old, new bespoke parts are generally not available for many brands of older van! All the fixtures and fittings, and appliances are from common to all brand suppliers, so many parts remain available for many years after manufacture.
My 2016 Lunar is a dealer special, which brings the spec closer to a Clubman, and it's remained pretty faultless in the near 6 years I've owned it. Nothing structural has failed or broken, it still looks cosmetically as good as when I bought it at 18 months old.
I think the fact that Lunars hold their price in the general marketplace well compared to the competition has to speak for itself. I could sell my van for as much if not more than I paid for it over 5 years ago! Lunars light weight and high specifications still make them popular.
With a s/h caravan, condition is everything, and damp to be avoided, the brand or model is whatever suits you. TBH, when I was looking for my van, the s/h Lunars I looked at seemed to have faired better than many competitive brands who nearly all had something 'broken' on them, and that was 1-2 year old vans. I was swung towards Lunar as they seemed to be better and more durable build quality than many rivals, and if my van is typical, that seems to have been born out.
