We have a 2002 caravan which has a payload of 225kgs. I have been mindful of weight and everything is calculated inside. What I can't find out or don't understand is, is a gas bottle and spare wheel included in caravan weight or part of my payload? I read that before 1999, it was part of my payload and after 2011 new rules came in. What about the bit between?
At the moment, I include them both in my payload. I can't find a manual that goes back that far.
Hopefully this is not a daft question and someone can help.
Many thanks.

It's a Elddis Advante 524 2002 van.

I will of course keep including it all......but how lovely would it be to have all that weight back!🤣🤣

I believe it was for the manufacturer to identify what allowance had been included in the MIRO for these sort of items.

If the spare wheel was standard in the caravan then it would be included in the MIRO. The gas bottle, battery are not included in the MIRO of the caravan therefore you need to subtract about 40kg off the available payload for the battery and gas bottle. If caravan did not have a spare wheel as standard than that is another 15kg. Motor mover would take off another 30kg.

Thanks for your reply. We didn't buy the caravan new. So how would I know if it was standard? The front locker has fitting for two gas bottle and the spare wheel. They are brackets for these items to fit.
It's a single axle caravan and we are lucky enough that we are still fit enough to push it if we can't use the car. So no motor mover needed or fitted.

What you do know is the MTPLM so if you go to a public weighbridge you will know what it weighs and make a note of what it contains. That will be a useful starting point.

As a guide, this is the allowance from my Bailey manual for a 2015 caravan. The standard was from 2011. Yours will be different,

The Following Items are included in the MRO:
LPG - The mass of the recommended gas storage tank(s) when filled to 100% of the permissible maximum capacity. A mass of 10 kg per
cylinder is assumed and the number of cylinders is equal to the number of connections provided at the regulator.

Fluids - The mass of the liquids normally remaining in the systems:
1. Water heater system –100% of the manufacturer stated travelling capacity

2. Central heating system – 100% of the mass of fluid in the system

3. Freshwater – 100% of the manufacturer stated travelling capacity (you must travel with all water tanks empty)

4. Waste water holding tank – empty

5. Toilet system flushing tank – 100% of the manufacturer stated travelling capacity

6. Toilet system holding tank – empty

7. Essential fluids for the use of any other items of standard or factory fitted optional equipment – 100% of the manufacturer stated travelling capacity

Electricity Supply
1. 4Kg for the low voltage connection cable

Typical masses consist of:
Kettle 0.5Kg Aquaroll (empty) 5Kg
Bed Linen 6Kg Waste bin 1Kg
Crockery 5Kg Toilet Fluid 2.5 Kg
Saucepans 3Kg Cutlery 2 Kg
Wastemaster 6Kg Battery 25 Kg

I have the 2003 Avantι 505 and you have to add the bottles, battery and spare wheel to the allowance, plus mover if you have one.

The space in the front locker for the spare wheel was a interesting one as the wheel was too large to go through the locker door, later models had a smaller wheel to compensate.

I have a 1992 Abbey GTS 212 that also has space for a spare wheel that won't fit through locker doors...it must be some wierd tradition of the manufacturers 😊.Gary

Off topic, but my 2016 Lunar also has a spare wheel well in front gas locker, but wheel wont fit through locker door! - but couldn't use it anyway as struggle with nose weight (and that's with the spare slung on the awful Alko spare carrier behind the axle, offsetting nose weight!), no hope with it in the locker!

Back on topic.
Exact MIRO inclusions/exclusions have changed a number of times over the years, AND I believe manufacturers had some leeway on what they included, so unless you have the original user handbook stating exactly what it was and what was included, it's now all a bit of a gamble. Also, being an older van, there may have been repairs and modifications that compromise the original figure anyway. I've got all the original handbooks/brochures for my van, which was near new and unmodified when purchased, but the published MIRO was still inaccurate by a good few Kg when it was weighed! It's not a binding figure in any way, only guidance.

Far better off sort of working backwards from MPTLM, with the intent of not exceeding. Really need to weigh the van at some point, either empty (probably best) or loaded and work with that, adjusting payload as needs be by weighing everything that goes in it.

By weighing every item that goes in the van, you will end up with a likely accumulative error, so best not to push literally to the last Kg! Best to have a bit of latitude for the unexpected/un-calculated, ie. if you put a wet awning back in van, it'll likely weigh quite a few Kg more that in the dry state you originally weighed it in!

This is a pre-2011 caravan as it was in 2011 that the MIRO changed to include most of the above.

The gas bottles are definitely not part of the MIRO. I am unsure of the spare wheel as many caravans of that era never had a spare wheel.
