Hi. I have been using the above mirrors for quite a while. I find them very hard to set up right and when I do when I set off they are not right. I noticed one of the has a dot on the back of it. Is that for the drivers or passengers side maybe I am not using them correctly. Any help will be appreciated.Thanks.

I think that mine must be a problem with the shape of my cars mirrors VW Golf Mk 7.5 because they slope in a rounded shape and are not straight across. Sent an email to Milenco and I must say they replied quickly and they suggested that I might need F pads that work better with the VW groups cars mirrors. I sent them some photos of my mirrors and am awaiting a reply.

A lot of German cars seem to have issues with towing mirrors.

Our BMW X3 was awful with them, ended up biting the bullet and buying some EMUK mirrors, the downside is that they're no good when you sell your car

Funnily enough I saw a guy on site fitting some to his VW looked really easy.

Firstly, you don't say which model you've got, there are several in the current Millenco range, and been at least 2 types for some years now, plus various updates along the way, which I think was mostly to the clamps!

I've got Aero 4's, both heads have a retro-reflective white 'dot' of about 1" dia on the back. The mirrors and bracketry are not inherently 'handed', the nearside or offside fit is purely from the way you assemble the clamps/arms, the mirror head is symmetrical so has no up or down side. I've had mine for 6 years or so, and obtained second hand, so possibly 8 or 10 years old now!

Mine are flat glass, so a tad more critical in set up than the convex glass ones would be, but never had any difficulty in setting up to get a good view down side of van. Only comment on that is that they 'lift' slightly due to wind pressure when driving (clamps/arm fitted to top of car mirror), so I set them slightly 'low' when fitting, so they move into optimum position when driving. You get used to where to set after a few times. I set the clamps as far apart on the door mirror shell as possible to minimise the leverage effect from the arm on the clamps and make them as stable as possible. As to the rear 'view' in the mirrors, I set so that the side of the caravan is just visible, then you have some spacial awareness of the proximity of other vehicles to your van, if all you can see is vehicles/road then there is limited context, which is less helpful.

Part of my 'ritual' of hooking up the van, is to drive a sufficient short distance to get car and van perfectly straight, then I tweak the mirrors (all four) to get the optimum view.

How stable they are in use is VERY much down to the car door mirrors, whether they flex/move or vibrate with the Millencos fitted, only used mine on current car, and they've never been a problem for me. Only negative comments I've ever heard about them is a few cars with very 'odd' shaped door mirror shells making fitting the brackets difficult, if they fit OK, people seem otherwise very happy with them!

Another tip on fitting that applies to my car, and may do to others, I 'dip' the car mirror glass (electric mirrors, so easy) to create a bigger gap to ease fitting the clamps to the door mirror shell, and seat to full depth of clamp. I then adjust car mirrors to lower than normal setting to be able to watch the caravan wheels on turns, so clipping of kerbs can be avoided.

When on site and needing the car for non-towing use, I simply undo the clamps, remove the mirrors without disturbing anything, and stow in the gas locker. When I need them again, simply refit and then only minor tweaks needed to get perfect positioning again.

Hope that gives some help.

Another vote for EMUK.
Had then on my BMW, now have them on my VW perfect fit no vibration. You can just buy the brackets for the mirrors if you change your car.
They are not cheap but in my view worth every penny.

I use Milenko on my VW Tiguan. I never adjust them as they always fit back on exactly

-------------
We camped for years. In 2019 we bought an Elddis Avante 454. We like it as it is short (6.9m) and fits in our driveway and has a fixed bed.
We had 127 nights away in the caravan in 2023.

Are you using the F pads. They are slightly different to the other pads and fit better on VW cars. I have ordered a set.

My mirrors on my Citroen are a similar shape, never been a problem to me. The bracketry is very adjustable to suit a wide range of shapes. Here's the shape of mine: https://ultimatestyling.co.uk/wing-mirror-door-mirror-passenger-side-lh-citroen-c4........

Think the standard pads can be an issue on some cars, and the specialist pads needed, but thought that was about actually fitting, not adjustment problems.

The first time you attach them to your car takes about as long as Milenco or other towing mirrors, if you use the spanner and set them up properly, it makes them a lot quicker the second and any subsequent times you attach them as they will only go on the mirror in one position, so if you have tightened them properly, they don't need adjusting again.

I've had them for my BMW and a Ford Ranger, EMUK also do a pair with universal fittings which I am currently using for my Ford Edge, they're just OK, not as good as the versions that are designed for specific makes and models

Must have a narrow caravan then, as far as I'm aware, if the caravan is wider than the rear of the car, you legally must have towing mirrors to achieve the required sighting, would also be interesting if you had an accident as an insurer would almost certainly refuse to pay out.

Not to mention the £1000 fine and penalty points

I've never tried Milenco mirrors. I'm a bit concerned about them falling off and the ones I have seen have had too small mirror heads for my liking. As a former coach driver I do like decent sized mirrors.

I have been using strap-on mirrors for many years. I know some people don't like them but I've never had any problem with them. The mirror heads are a decent size and they will fit on virtually any shaped car mirror. Must admit I did have to buy some longer straps when I got my X Trail though, as the mirrors on that are quite big. No problem fitting them and they work just fine. Very little chance of them falling off either.

Best Regards,
Colin

Totally misinterpreted my post!

My reply was in reference to the one directly above.
If you had read all the posts from the start I do mention mirrors.
