Hi all. My first post on this forum and looking for info on my 2008 Abbey 470 roof depth, from outer to inside ceiling.
Being brave, I intend to drill a 1 inch hole through from outside to install a small HF antenna. It will be attached and used only when parked, not mobile. I installed one on my Hymer motorhome roof some years ago and realise that the design and strength betwwen the two are chalk and cheese. On the Abbey I intend to plate the roof outer and the ceiling inner to spread the loading although as I said, the antenna is not huge and just needs some insurance from breeze or wind gusts.
Any help would be appreciated.

Suction won't work with tranceiver set up.
It relies on metal to metal contact to provide a good groud plane for transmitting.

ok then the type that attach via a pole onto the a frame of the caravan? the less chance of making a hole the better means the less chance of water getting in and causing far bigger problems

I could attach a pole alongside but for many technical reasons I don’t want to go down that route.
The system I used on the motorhome worked very well, was unobtrusive, and was connected in minutes. It just required the said hole drilling through the roof which I am perfectly willing to do once I know what depth I am dealing with. Hence the question in my first post.

yes but the materials used on a motorhome are different to that on a caravan, which is made mainly from aluminium and fibreglass, so even after you have drilled thr the roof, there is still no guareentee your system will work and then you have a couple of gapping hole to sort out after
