First night’s casserole plus staples (bread rolls, eggs, milk). Thereafter, we try hard to buy local produce (minimum road miles) to support local producers & put something back into the local economy. We’ve enjoyed Shropshire Blue cheese in Shropshire, Galloway beef in Galloway (especially at Castle Douglas), local venison from game dealers (Drymen at Loch Lomond a favourite), local sourdough from any baker that makes it (Tewksbury was awesome), smokies from Arbroath, mussels & prawns on the harbour at Oban, amazing fish & chips from any fishing harbour (queue at Arbroath chippy well deserved), Ayrshire epicure potatoes in their short season, and any farm table selling eggs, local honey & jams. Plus Ian Mellis cheese shop in Morningside, where I can get a cheese board of small batch cheese for the MH table. Oh, add in whisky & gin direct from the distillery: thankfully I can get Beinn an Tuirc gin (from Mull of Kintyre, using local botanicals & local hydro for energy) in the supermarket now!
I’ve read posts (not here) of people bragging about stocking up at the supermarket at Ardrossan harbour prior to spending a week on the Isle of Arran - they’re missing out, because Arran has a “food trail” around the island with everything from local cheese to chocolate; famous oatcakes; mustards, chutneys & jams.

I usually have it in my plan to go out and about at least once during my stay at a campsite for 5+ nights, and eat out that day in case I get back too late and too tired to cook.

Or to meet up with friends and eat out during my trip.

Got to be dog-friendly venues though.

I have a food box stocked with essentials which I restock after each holiday..things like t bags, a small container of sugar sachets..(.Costa etc, always take more than I need so have some camping supplies😊, salt and pepper...see last comment!) A tub of cereal, tin of beans, tomato ketchup, salad cream, tuna, biscuits, crisps and usually an El Paso rice meal. A spray sunflower oil is a no mess option, Tubs of rice, pasta...also take a loaf of bread.
Then I cook a chicken (strip the meat so no bones), this will do a couple of meals like salad,
curry or the rice meal. Frozen bolognaise will do another meal. Anything at home in the fridge will be taken in a cool bag to transfer to the fridge in caravan and includes milk, cheese, eggs, bacon, sausages, ham.
Never plan on shopping while on holiday if can help it. The exception is when we go abroad. Then I take basics and shop for fresh the day after we arrive, eat out on the first night.

When we go away either abroad or at home, we take enough for one meal and then do a shop locally.
Too many people go away and don't support the area they are visiting. If abroad, going to a shop is part of the fun as well

A few essentials, butter, milk, tea etc, and a meal for the first night with wine or beer, the rest we just make up as we go. We very, very rarely book a site, never in France, let alone plan every meal! I am not a creature of habit, just take things as they come, that approach horrifies our friends who we are going to the USA with in Sept, so everything has had to be planned to the day, but I have done it in many other countries, and hate to be tied down to a timetable, especially knowing what I am having for breakfast every day!

Flexibility is freedom. 👍

Part of the joy for us is seeking out the excellent French produce available at local markets, fish markets and supermarkets. Surely that’s all part of the traveling experience……..Isn’t it? 🤷.

To go to foreign lands and eat only pre prepared British food is just not what traveling is about, but we are all different I guess, it is certainly nothing to do with being logical or organised. I served in an Infantry regiment, logic and organised were top of the list, BUT, things could change in a second and that is where you had to be flexible and able to adapt very quickly. My main career of 34 years years had absolutely no timetable, no two days were the same, again the whole routine would be up in the air in a second and we would have to respond.

So I guess that is why I am the way I am, no real plans, just take each day as it comes. I personally would hate to be creature of habit……But that’s just me.👍

With you all the way there, we never ever take food away with us if we go abroad. We did take a few bits and pieces when we went to Lincolnshire recently, but only because we might not find a shop until the next day.

I was never in the military, but I did have to be flexible and adaptable. One thing I could never handle was boredom, so spontaneity was the way. Take each day as it comes, very little pre-planning. It's not just you there's a few of us about.

If you're going to be away in the 'van for three or four weeks (which is what we do), you might as well take all the perishable food with you, since it will not keep until you return home.

Our problem is that our eating habits (especially breakfast) are completely different when in the van.
We usually end up taking bacon away with us, but hardly ever eat it while in the van.
We almost never eat cereal at home, but it's a staple part of breakfast on holiday.

Evening meals whilst on hols tend to be simple, since 'slaving over the cooker' is not my idea of fun.
