Quick question. I have booked a campsite in the summer that charges for an awning on the caravan. I ticked the no box. Hubby, says we need to pay because we use a sun canopy (no sides) just a roof, 3 poles and 3 ropes.
Am I right, that this is non chargeable? They mean the one that sits on the ground and I guess could damage the grass.....therefore the cost????

A lot of sites DO charge for a sun canopy.

Ask the site. It’s the only way you’ll know for sure.
CCC charges for a wind out awning with no sides. Other (independent) sites don’t charge us anything even if it was a full driveway awning on the MH; ditto CAMC (on the sites we’ve been on), you just get a bigger pitch if you opt for “with awning”.

Seems crazy!!! To be charged for the space! I would expect to have that space with or without an awning to sit outside the van.

Thank you all for the advice. I will get in touch with campsite........and guess I will have to tell hubby he was right! 😳😳🙄🙄

If we were charged for a sun canopy we would go elsewhere. Rip off merchants! No wonder people rather go to France as even with the cost of the ferry it is cheaper for a 3 - 4 week holiday especially if using ACSI card.

I have never heard of the c&cc charging extra for awnings at their sites. Perhaps some of the cs sites will charge extra, but that is really nothing to do with the club itself.

You might get away with a sun canopy if its taken down each night. Some sites will charge for awnings because of the potential damage they can do to the grass which doesn't really apply to a sun canopy. Only the site can expand on their policy.

Just to update. The site is indeed charging for the sun canopy, which I don't really understand. It is 2 metres from the van, so not bigger than the size of a car or table and chairs to sit outside. It has no sided just 3 poles (it's an isabella ).

It is not some thing that stays up as it is not weather proof/windproof. I am not paying £4 a day to maybe have it up???? I have never been charged for this before. I won't put it up this time and will take a parasol to sit under. However I'm my mind this is far more likely to catch the wind and damage something. Seems daft to me. I have paid for the space. I won't be damaging the grass any more than I would be entering and exiting the van in one place??

I have used the caravan and camping club sites since I joined a couple of years ago. I like them and will continue to do so. I look at some independent sites recently and couldn't believe how much they have gone up in cost. And at the end of the day it is not a cost thing, it is still cheaper to pay the £4 than go to else where. Just I don't understand the extra cost?

Sorry, rant over!

Not a rant in my view, a reasonable objection to an unjust charge! Camp sites seem to find more and more ways of extracting money out of you PURELY for their profit. Can't for the life of me see any detriment, wear & tear, utilisation of extra space, etc. etc. to the site from a canopy like yours!

Next week, I'm off to a CL site that charges an extra £1/night for a dog, absolutely nothing provided for that charge, the dog exercise area is off camp site land and on a public footpath open to all, there's not a blade of grass (it's TOTALLY gravel throughout!) that a dog could even damage, so why the charge? - just profiteering because they can! It's not as if they are a budget site in the first place trying to scratch a little extra, damned expensive site in fact, just plain greed. Only booked there for it's convenience of location for a special event and for 3 nights, otherwise would avoid like the plague!

The big clubs come in for a lot of criticism, much of it justified, but even they don't charge for an awning, let alone just casting a shadow as a canopy does!

Trouble is, there are far too many people camping these days with money to burn, and no sense of value for money, so these profiteering site ways spread more and more as they can get away with it!

Used C&CC sites for years and never been charge for awnings or dogs in all those years. Have not used them for last 4 or 5 years though as very few have super pitches, which after 50+ years of caravanning age catches up and is now a priority. They do seem to have also got more expensive than lots of private sites

I've been paying 2 a night extra for our wee dog and I can't for the life of me see what facilities the dog would use. He certainly doesn't use the showers cos he's a smelly muchacho. And he doesn't use the wash up facilities to clean his bowl, much prefering to get me to do it. So, it's just got to be down to the site owners fleecing me because they know I wouldn't leave him in a boarding kennel.

In my opinion some sites these days seem to find any excuse to put on extra charges for whatever they can get away with, and as long as there are people who will pay them, they will continue to do so. Very little is ever offered for these extra charges, it's simply a case of what the site can get away with. How on earth can anyone justify charging for a sun canopy?? Ridiculous!

Colin

I've noticed a big increase in charges for dogs on some French campsites this year. They used to be free or a token gesture but this year one of our regularly used sites (used to be privately owned, now part of a chain) is charging €5 per dog per night - for nothing! Needless to say, with 2 dogs we're not visiting that site again! Many others are now charging €3 per night. Makes €1 a night seem an absolute bargain - though even that is money for nothing!
