It depends which exit you will be taking from the M6.
From the south it will presumably be J36, then the A590 to Greenodd (good roads, mix of single and dual carriageway), right at the roundabout onto the A5092, which becomes the A595 at Grizebeck, and follow the A595 all the way to Ravenglass.
From Greenodd the roads are all single carriageway, with hills, corners and some narrow points. It is fine for towing, at least wide enough for a car and caravan to fit on their own side of the road and not too busy, but you need to take your time and be aware that it can be a tight squeeze in places if you meet a bus or truck coming the other way (doesn’t happen too often).
It is roughly 50 miles from the motorway to Ravenglass and will take you a good hour and a half - as said before, you can’t rush, but the road takes you through some attractive scenery so take your time and enjoy the journey.
There are plenty of lay-bys along the way, by the way.
Incidentally, DO NOT attempt to go via the Corney Fell road (pretty much single track) whatever your SatNav or route finder might say.
We know the route pretty well, so feel free to ask if you have any more questions.
