One other benefit is the reduction in noseweight as the bottles are so much lighter. A full bottle with 7.5 Kgs of propane weighs about the same as an empty 6Kg Calor one.

I see people continually recommending Morrisons as a place to fill these bottles, but when you look at the map in the link provided earlier there actually aren't that many of them now doing it.

Supply and Demand! It's a commercial world, and no two ways about it, the demand for LPG in motor vehicles has gone into free-fall, so petrol station forecourts have abandoned supplying it over past few years.
I believe highest demand for it now is mostly leisure (Safefill and the like, and fitted tanks to MHs) and domestic heating, which is catered for by different outlets - more like delivered to user's premises as with fuel oil.
Looking at the price of LPG from some outlets, it's not even half the price of Calor/Flogas refills per/Kg, and the price has risen far steeper than Petrol over past year, so the appeal may be waning for the leisure market too!
It's going to take a lot of refills to recoup your investment in a £200 cylinder at today's prices! On my reckoning, over 100 full refills before saving money unless you can only seek out only the cheapest outlets, and then maybe in 60-70 refills! In the past, prices were better and it looked a better investment.
I've used just over TWO 6Kg Calors/Flogas in my 6 years of caravanning, so you can see my lack of enthusiasm! I've had a couple of weeks off grid in that time, and use my gas cooker daily on every trip! If I'm still caravanning in 30 odd years to see any monetary gains, I'll be in the Guineas book of records for a number of points of longevity I suspect!
Like a lot of things, times change, Safefill and the like may well have seen their day on a wider marketplace, and become quite niche!

At a saving of +£15 every time you fill up, it should not take long to recoup the outlay so a good laugh when someone states it would take over 100 refills. Our last refill on an empty 7.5kg bottle cost us under £10. The 6kg Calor exchange cost nearly £30!
LPG was around before many cars were converted to run on gas so basically no real change as LPG has many other applications.

Where do people generally fill up one of these bottles in France? Asking for a friend...

Wherever possible? Our 7.5kg easily lasts us for the duration of our stay as no heating used and we BBQ a lot or have cold meats and salad.

It's not just petrol stations that do LPG. Marquis now has a supply although they area little bit dearer.
I've also had a couple of fills from builders merchants.
Absolutely right, if you have a quick look in your area, you might be surprised at how many LPG outlets there are.
Having owned an 7.5kg cylinder for some years, I find it easy to get either filled or topped up. I wouldn't bother with Morrisons or forecourt outlets as they're obliged to charge with full level of duty too, a builders merchants on the other hand, charged me approx 43p/litre on last fill, having rated the sale as domestic heating fuel.
For rally and off-grid use, Safefill is a no-brainer
