I see there is a letter in this months camping & caravanning Mag were a pick up owner was not let on a site? its a pity the site owners don’t ask why we own pick ups before they start banning them if they cant tell the difference between a family on holiday and a gipsy they should get out more in the real world and have a good look what are they going to bad next red cars sorry but they get right up my nose
Hi Kev, got a mate who works in some of the most hospitable parts of the uk, often up the side of mountains, he uses a 4x4, the type with the 5 seater cab and pick-up rear end, as he also tends to be away from home most of the time he lives in his caravan for most of the year. He often tells me of sites that have refused him entry due to the pick-up and towing a big twin axle van, well if you live in it best make it comfy and spacious! I think that there must be many folks in and around the UK who are in a similair position and often get refused by the narrow-sighted brigade of owners. Perhaps if they actually thought of the revenue that is brought to a site by working folks they would see that not only would these people recommend their sites to other working folks but also recommend them to the many friends they have who are looking for a site for their holidays!
BTW Welcome to ukcampsite.co.uk, hope you find it to be as friendly and enjoyable as I and many other members do!
Thank god I have a blue car! lol
One day, maybe!

I know exactly what you mean. I used to work for a major UK civil engineering company. Our Toyota Hi-Lux 4x4's were bright orange!I, like most of the lads towed my home behind me, as we worked all over the UK. The number of times I was refused entry from sites was unreal! Still, I hope it's a lesson learned for now that I'm a campsite owner, I tend not to 'pigeonhole' people like that. I've had people mail us here as well as call us up, asking if we will take pick ups and twin-axle 'vans. Of course we do. Hopefully, I can tell the difference between holidaymakers and travellers.
You can't entirely blame site owners in this matter (although they usually are to blame for most other things!) Admit it, you see a twin axle van pull on site with either a pick up or Transit towing it and what do you do? We all do it, despite the howls of protests I'm sure will follow......you mentally wonder what valuables you need to put away under lock and key. And make another mental note not to come back if the owner lets pikeys on.

They dont get refused because they are workers, they get refused because :- (a) they probably want to be there over the 28 day rule; (b) they get up very early, and thus disturb holidaymakers - who then complain bitterly about it; (c) or they come back late at night, and still disturb the holidaymakers who again complain bitterly about it. Some might even make the place look untidy, or like a builders yard, and people do tend to complain......
why i have a lwb transit minibus REASON there is two adults four kids and my little boy is severly disabled has to travel in awheelchair so is ramped and clamped i would have loved a hobby caravan for the size and they are good prices for how big they are but after much investigating my chances of getting on many sites was drastically reduced cant think why lol
I can see were you are coming from but want I am saying is if a pick up turns up on site talk to the driver first the pick up I own has personal plate have you ever seen a pikey van with personal plates they have ones that don’t add up to the vehicle there in My wife is disabled so it has a blue badge on it have you every seen a pikey with a blue badge why would they need them they park were they like any way I am self employed HGV driver so yes I do use it for work and pleasure I used too run a discovery and escort van before the wife got MS and had to pack up driving so I had to get a vehicle which would pull a twin axle van + get the wife’s Mobility scooter in + the wheelchair + the 3 wheel walker and the lift that get the wife in and out of the caravan and as you can see I could not get then all in to a car so that is why I brought a pick up
And I hope this makes one or two of you smile I do own my own lorry but what do I do I lay tarmac for a living so yes I have been call a pikey more then once
