We have just been to our caravan storage to pick our van up and the brakes are stuck, has anyone any ideas how to help us out or suggest anything that we can do.
Can you also tell me if the brake pads on caravans are bog standard car pads?
Hi, lift the legs and leave the jockey wheel down and try moving the van hitch left to right this may just rock the brakes off. I have also in the past tapped the back plate on the drum. If these don't work you may have to remove the wheels adjust back the brakes and remove the drums. This will allow you to clean up the drums and shoes before refitting. I never leave brakes on when storing due to this problem, I chock the wheels and lower the legs hope this helps you.

First thing to try is hook it up and jerk it backward with the car, the brake shoes are pulled off in reverse and further on going forward. If this doesn't work then you may need to remove the wheels and wack the drums with a hammer to vibrate the shoes free. Once free the brakes will grab for a few stops so brake gently for a mile or so until the rust is cleaned off the drums and leave the handbrake off next time!!
HI to you as already said jack it upget the biggest hammer/club hammer if you have alloy wheels remove them then with all your might or as if you had just caught some rotten toerag in your caravan belt the living sh-t out of the drum all well and good it will come free then its best to remove the drum an clean it out of debrie you will also see if the linings are damaged as i have sometimes known the lining to come away from the shoe if they are in poor condition ...good luck
Hi with the hand brake off and the wheels blocked so it will not roll on to you. use a hammer to top on the back plate.(back plate from under van look at the back of the wheel you will see a round plate witch your wheel is bolted to tap this with hammer. If van is not jacked up you may have to do both back plates.if van jacked up you will not be able to turn wheel.once freed off they are usually ok.and when leaving parked for a long time it best to block wheels and leave hand brake off. Ps it’s best to jack up van to make sure none of the wheels are binding.

Just one quick little observation. UK caravans operate in the main with brake shoes, not brake pads. I'm not aware of any exceptions to this............
