Just got delivery of mine  .

I opted for a Palm One TX PDA with tomtom Navigator 5 and its brilliant.

Went out tonight with the Father in LAw who also wants one and we did everything apart from handbrake turns to confuse it and FAILED.

It only took seconds to re-calibrate and give directions again.

Don't buy a Garmin (Garbage) street pilot.

We don't get a satelite signal until we are about half way to our destination, then when you get to a crucial part ie: exiting a motorway, or a large traffic Island it decides to re-calculate, very slowly.

This happened to us on Friday teatime, we were going from our home about 3 miles from Jct25 off the M1 to Bosworth Water trust at Market Bosworth, Nr Nuneaton, even though I knew the route as I have driven past the area many times, we decided to see if this "Garbage" sorry I mean Garmin would take us the same way.

Well we did ok until we got onto the M1, it told us to exit the M1 at Jct 22, ( I would have exited at the A42/M42 Jct 24a) as we were coming up the ramp on the exit at Jct 22 it decided to re-calculate, now I knew vaguely which way to go across country, but said to Anthony we will follow the SatNav & see where it takes us, well we went around the island & turned in the general direction I knew we should be going, the "Garbage" eventually found us & told us to take the 4th exit of the next roundabout, which meant we were heading back towards the M1, I thought it would send us back around the Island & then send us the right way, but it didn't, it then told us to go back North on the M1 which we did, when we got to the M42 jct it told us to carry onto the next jct which we did, it then told us to go back south on the M1 back to Jct 22 again,  we had already driven 20 miles out of our way & there was no way I was going to go back down that route just for it to re-calculate at the same point as before & tell us to go back again. We went the way I had originally said we should have gone, down the A42 to Jct 11 to go onto the A444 the "Garbage" took until just before we turned off the A42 to find us again, & then told us to make a U turn !!!!! on the A42 !!! needless to say we didn't attempt it, we got onto the A444 the "Garbage" re-calculated again, then took us to our destination about 10 miles from there.

That is the 4th time we have used it, & it has got something wrong, everytime. We will NOT be using it again.

We wanted a TomTom originally because we know a few peeps with them & they had never had any problems. But a friend with a "Garbage" said it was brilliant & better than the TomTom.

We have since done a lot of reading up on the SatNav's & we are going to buy a TomTom One.  I think it just goes to prove you get what you pay for.

we`ve had a nightmare with our tomtom 500 today. we decided we`d have a ride out to the coast, Brid and Hornsea, that sort of area. we were feeling abit hungry so lets find a KFC. went to restaurants in the POI menu , and 4 KFCs within 10 miles. "funny i thought, didnt think there were any round here" so we put in a route for the nearest one and after heading into the countryside i said , "no way is there a KFC here"

we ended up at a grain storage silo behind carnaby industrial estate. "maybe thats the grain they use in the feed for the chickens for KFC"

put another search in for another KFC then ended up near a large tree on the Leven bypass...... getting p****d off by now.

put a search for macdonalds in , took us straight there. Guess what was on the other side of the roundabout ? yep a KFC. went back to the tomtom , nearest KFC 7 miles....

then on another occasion according to sat nav we were driving through the fields at the side of the A614. saw the icon for several filling stations , looked like farms to me ??????

whats all that about ???

We have the same model as yours and have had no problems - it initially took about ten minutes to lock on to a satellite and after that it was normally about 4 mins. We have now changed the software to tomtom and the satellite lock is even faster! Both tomtom and the navigator programmes are good, and I think for the price (£130) it is excellent value for money.

Have I got this right?  I have the Medion also from Aldi, but I can change the programt to TomTom Software?

Please could you let me know how to do this if I have understood you correct

Got my Garmin Street Pilot about three weeks ago; works extremely well for me - could it be anything to do with the areas that people are located in? I'm in north Cheshire.....
As to Asda/Tesco and other POI's, several close to me are not included - are these lists compiled by individuals and posted on the net rather than the actual supermarkets/garages/cinemas/theme parks/whatever? I suspect that all these are just listed by ordinary folk who happen to have found them in their travels........

You should have bought a Tom Tom!!

Talking of Tom Tom, there's a new update available on the website.  Can anyone tell me if I download this straight to the unit, or to the computer first?

We have the Panasonic fitted in the X-Trail and "Flossie" has given good cheerful advice for 4+ years now.Never had any problem finding the satellites

Sadly she is being retired to a care home for aged sat nav ladies as the new X will be fitted with Nissan's BIrd View System

Hi

We also had a Medion Satnav system from Aldi.  We had hours of struggle trying to get it to work and wondering, because it was the first time we'd had anything to do with satnav, whether it was us being stupid or the equipment that wasn't working.  After an extremely lengthy discussion with Medion's Help Line we decided that it was the equipment.  It would not pick up the satellite no matter what we tried.  Anyway, we got the money back from Aldi because they hadn't got any more in stock (which I thought was good of them), went to Halfords and bought a TomTom 700.

Can't praise the system enough, although I've never tried to find a KFC with it.  We chose the 700 because its got all the european maps as well which should cut down dramatically on the 'discussions' with my better half when trying to find our way through France with the caravan.

Anne
