Does sound pretty bad MPG, I would expect around 50 mpg but I will check later (gotta go out in a min).

I have a magane and find the computor very accurate; I have tested it against the old 'pen and paper method'.

I have looked around and I was right; you should be getting over 50 mpg.

Depends a lot on how you drive it.

If you drive flat out in each gear and brake late and hard your consumption will drop dramatically.

To get what the manufacturers state, you need to have a feather on the gas pedal and generally not drive it hard. max speed for best consumption is around 65 mph.

Oh, and keep your revs below 2,500. I know 2,500 is generally when the turbo cuts in but hey, you can't have everything.

Incidentally I have a 1.5 megane deisel. I drive up the motorway to work. Very gently and 65 mph....I get a whopping 70 mpg.

that is poor. we have a 2.0tddi mondeo and on a 160 mile round trip to the coast today the computer reckoned an average of 55mpg. never had it below 42mpg and that was round town for  a week with no longer runs.

i try and change gear below 2000 rpm unless i have to "boot it" for any reason.

I also suspect  that 34mpg is well below par.

As previously mentioned, of course it depends on your driving habits.

Unfortunately, unlike on older diesel engines, with yours there ARE NO ADJUSTMENTS YOU CAN MAKE. Everything is software controlled.  So all you can do is take it to somewhere that has the computer device that plugs into the cars engine management system and have the data checked.

A main dealer will probably want to charge around £80 for this service, but look around for a local engine tuning place who will probably do it a lot cheaper.

Thanks for all the replies,i do most of my driving locally and i am not really heavy with my right foot, when i first had the car (12 months ago)i felt it was heavy on fuel so i took it to a independent renault dealer he could not find any faults with the car.

Given cold starts, short runs, town driving, then I would suggest 34mpg is acceptable.

You see what the fuel consumption is during a long run though.  You should then get around 45-50mpg.  Then you know for certain.

Hi Kev, had a 03 1.9dci and only travelled 2 miles to work a day. Fuel consumption was poor around 35mpg. However taking it on a long run on motorways etc. and driving as smoothly as I could I managed 54mpg according to the computer.

Now got a Terrano ll and thats a different story!!
