This weekend we have removed the gas fire (and had the gas disconnected!) from our 1991 van (toddler kept turning gas on when not lit!). We have patched the floor and now cannot decide what to replace it with.

We intend to cover the hole in the wardrobe front left by the old fire with wood and cover in heat reflective stuff (like used behind radiators in the home) and then mount onto it either an oil filled or convector heater. To finish the job and keep tiddler from singeing his fingers we plan to make a mini radiator cover!

Has anyone else gone for a slim panel heater (oil filled)? I am not sure how much heat would find its way out of the radiator cover, compared to a convector heater.

We expect to have to use a fan heater to take the immediate chill off the van but hoped the new heater would keep us snug at night.

As ever grateful for your views and experiences.....

PS we need to get our skates on with this as are on on the first outing of the year in a couple of weeks and I don't want to wake up with icicles on my nose!

I'd say go for a convector - will warm the van up quicker than an oil filled plus it won't be as heavy.
