I have used superchips for my last 5 cars.  they have always been good.  car's performance has improved dramatically, and reliability does not seem to have been affected.

Have a look at Diesel Chip Tuning.

If they can be relied upon, and it looks to me like they can, the customer recommendations for these people appear conclusive.

IMPORTANT:  Avoid like the plague people selling you very cheap  (£5.00 - £10.00) 'tuning chips'.  They are not chips at all.  They are a resistor, that fools your engine management cpu into thinking the engine is always cold, and increases fuelling.  Statement of the obvious really, but running continuously with increased fuelling commensurate with a cold engine WILL RUIN YOUR ENGINE.

Choco,

Can I endorse www.mrhoot.com as a supplier of removable engine chips,(similar to Diesel Chip Tuning ) above.

I have had one on my C5 Estate for about two years and the difference having the 'chip' installed, makes towing a caravan a pleasure instead of an exercise in concentration. After all, the addition of extra power allows longer periods in higher gears and less gear changing in general. The only downside with chipping is the Insurance problem. I am coming up to the annual chase for better (ie cheaper) insurance. If anyone knows of a Insurance Co. that has a positive attitude to chipped cars please respond. I'm no boy racer. Just someone who wants to be able to tow in safety.

I highly recommend the 1st one Johnjory posted. I have the same one in my car. People can not believe my car is a 1.9 diesel. It pulls better than most petrol cars. We go up most hills at 60mph in 5th gear whilst towing. We also tow at close to 100% of kerbweight so it is not as though it is a light van. I am looking at getting another car to put the weight better to the car, but not in any rush as it is not needed. If I did not have the chip it would be a different matter.

My car does over 40mpg and that is towing over 1200kg behind it. Renaults are well known for having a low towing weight. The wife has one.
