We're off to the Lakes during the Easter hols, and would like to use our awning. How do you folk heat it in the cool spring evenings? We don't have a van with an awning warmer and are considering taking a small fan heater to run off the site electrics. Last summer (July actually) in Ayr it was so cold we couldn't sit out with friends even in the awning and 8 of us were squashed into the van in the evenings for a dram and a game of Scrabble (bit too cosy if you ask me). I'd be interested to hear your ideas!

Hi Ruthy,

Yep, a good electric fan heater is the answer, not only will it warm you all up, it will also dry up any condensation in the awning as a result of you all sitting in there.

Tesco's have them on 'special' at the moment.

We tried a fean heater in our full awining last year, it was ok, but had to remember tht there was a limit of 16 amps on the pitch.  With it running at 2kw, this was using around 8 amps.  If we added up everything else that could possible be on at the same time (water heater, lights, TV etc) then this would be around 14 amps.  We would have to remember to switch something off if we wanted to turn the kettle on.

We have a mini super ser heater that we use in our conservatory at home.  Its very compact, just big enough to fit in a 6kg gas bottle.  This provided more than enough heat in the awning, whithout the worry of tripping the electrics.

We did use the fan heater on 1kw during the evening to keep the chill of and reduce condensation.

The problem with a halogen heater is that it heats the person/object not the air.  Good if you are directly infront of it, not so good if you are not near it.

Friends have one of the Trauma awning warmers.  The are only any good it the fire is the same side as awning.  The fire also needs to be on 2kw and the fan on full to make any difference.

Just my thoughts.

Trevor

Thought the halogen heater was ideal on last years camping trip, however we have not tried the heater beyond september, fair comment Trevor.

Thanks everyone, I think we'll give the fan heater a try, remembering to switch off all unneccessary appliances!

Thanks guys, its still so cold out I can't imagine ever being able to sit out in the awning, heating or not! (We had a few flakes of snow an hour ago, hope we have a sudden burst of spring in 10 days when our hols start!)
