Have a look here further down the page, they do 4x4 cycle carriers and also sell a height kit to raise the rack 30 cms to avoid what you are towing

We have just got one of the above cycle racks and they may seem expensive but they are brilliant and extremely well made. Just the job for our V7o volvo although admittedly we haven't towed with it yet!

I have a maxraxx it is brilliant but expensive you have to buy the offset and swann neck to go around you wheel and they carry up to 4 bikes. However on my setup to go around the tyre it sticks out beyond the wheel and encroaches on the space available between car and van. So when your bikes are on the back and towing your turning circle is limited. Simple 90deg turns need to be planned (that is with four bike on). The rack is very good, on site you can leave them on the back of the car as they can be locked in position for security.

Hi,

I must be honest and say that we travel with our bikes in the Van. I load the awning and most of the heavy items in the car and pack and strap the bikes inside. I'm not sure what they weigh (prefer not to think about it) but all three of them are a lot less than an awning.

I have a Maxx Rack for when we go off solo..they are great, but would not be too happy towing with one as the weight must be added to the tow bar weight. Which in my case is on the top side of high!

regards

Hi jonboy1, stick them on the cars roof. Up out of the way and you can forget about them. No problems turning ,reversing, and access into the boot.

Hi Jonboy - stick them on the cars roof. Up out of the way and you can forget about them. No problems turning ,reversing, and access into the boot from Paulni. Your Vitara is quite tall as is mine and trying to reach up and put bikes on a tall vehicle is quite problematic especially if you are vertically challenged. Also with the maxxraxx they have designed the rack to tilt back so if you need to gain access to the rear door this is possible. Ultimates suggests putting them in the van, again you need to be careful if your bikes are well oiled and also they need to be well tied down so that not to damage your pride and joy. You know what it is like the bikes will be the last thing to put in before you go and your excited to leave as soon as possible and that s when you bugger something up.

Hi Chalkie56

I have a Honda CR-V and Argente 530/5 and have been looking at the MaxxRaxx since October last year. I am now under some serious pressure to purchase a cycle carrier that will allow us to take 4 bikes and the caravan on our main trips.

With regard to the MaxxRaxx, I have been worried about space between cycles and caravan, which ultimately affects the turning circle. I have drawn everything out on paper and understand the space I have available but it doesn't mean much to be honest.

Roof mounted cycles are an option but like you I would have a problem putting the centre cycles on the roof and my wife wants to be able to use the cycle carrier on trips away with the kids, particularly during the schools hols.

The MaxxRaxx seems to be the better solution but I'd hate to shell out a few hundred quid to find that I wasn't able to tow and carry the cycles as intended. Without the van there is really no problem.

Due to tow weight restrictions, 100 Kg, I'd planned to put 2 of the bikes in the van, which would also give me a little more clearance between cycle and van.

Any chance of a picture with the rack fully loaded and caravan on back?

Cheers

Mick

Hi carterma I have taken 4 bikes on my maxxraxx with van in tow to the isle of wight. I have had to be carefull in my turning circle, islands were ok and normal T junctions but some of the small T junctions on the Isle of wight were tight so I just took a wider circle like a HGV. I had an extension piece as well which raised the bike height this helped. But give maxx raxx a call he is very good and helpfull.
