I bought a "new" van at the recent NEC show . The dealer says it was sold to someone who had returned it due to illness-it had not been used. I was assured several times that it was a 2006 van with transferable warranty from Jan 2006. The invoice says it is a 2006.

When the CRIS document came it said first registered August 2005.

I phoned CRIS as I felt (and still do ) that I had been deliberately deceived. The man at CRIS said the caravan is classed as 2006 and can be advertised as such.Any after August are counted as the following year.

This is all new to me and I feel that when I want to change it will be a 2005 in the dealers eyes. I would feel uneasy about advertising it in any future sale as 2006.

Ha anyone else come accross this ?

Most manufacturers introduce their new models in the Autumn. So if you buy a new model in November 2005 it will be classed as a 2006 year. I think its always been like this.

The 2006 caravans are usually available for the Caravan show in November. We collected ours in December and it was the 2003 furnishings not 2002 despite having been at the dealers since late August.

I Bought a New Bailey Pageant Monarch Series 5 on December 16th 2004, it is a 2005 model but is registered as a 2004 production and is insured as that. Hope this helps.

I can understand your concern, but it's simply the way the caravan industry works.

Although Bailey have recently changed the pattern a bit, it is traditional and normal for new models to be launched around August/September, so you have a 2006 model, but originally bought in 2005.  I would suggest that when you come to change it, you'll not suffer unduly.

In December, I bought a 'new' 2005 model, although the 2006 models, which have several differences from mine, were then available for ordering.

As it it a 2006 model, and you bought it in 2006, presumably with an invoice to prove that, when you come to change it I would suggest that when negotiating with a dealer, involving the van in a trade-in, you simply tell them that you bought it in 2006, quoting the particular month.

Thanks for your comments. My only concern now is warranty transfer. I need to look into this. In order to maintain warranty I was told I need a service in January 2007, a sticker on the window says March 2007- a year after I bought it . But I now know  it was first registered last August  . I am not even sure that Baileys were allowing transfer of warranty  then .I was told they only did this from January 2006 so I will also have to check this.

I meant to add in reply to Michael Bird that I did not think it fair  mention the dealer's name at this stage as I am not yet sure of all the facts. However, I still feel that having first turned down an unused 2005 caravan(same model) from them just before the show(possibly a 2005 model) they should have made it clear if only for warranty reasons.

I did a  search on this site on the dealers who came out quite well, so I will try to get  the warranty sorted before passing judgement
