Decided to buy a telly for the van - always said we wouldn't but gave in.  Just been away for the weekend and the reception was awful - unwatchable.  We have a fixed status dome type aerial but it didn't have much affect on picture quality.  I seem to remember reading on here in the past that they're not much good.  So my question is what should I buy?  I'm looking at the Vision Plus 530/18-2 which practical caravan recommended as a 'best buy' from a selection of mast aerials but by the time I buy it and a mast and a booster and 12v adaptor it amounts to about £75 (more than the telly!).  I don't mind paying that if it works but I want to be sure I'm getting something that's reliable and doesn't require too much fiddling around to get good reception.  Is a set top aerial with booster any better? - They're certainly a lot cheaper!  Any advice, suggestions (or free gifts) will be very much appreciated.  Thanking you all in advance.

Our new van has just gone in for some waranty jobs, one of them being the status omni aerial. We didn't have any luck with the one on our last van so we just put it down to them being useless. However a few weeks ago we were camping with some friends & we decided to try the new one.(we actually use a satelite setup but we were trying the status out.) we got absolutely b****r all in our van but my mate Cindy was near to us & she got a very good picture with hers (phew this is long winded) so we decided that perhaps ours wasn't wire up properly (including the one on our last van). So when the van went in last week we added this to the list....

Watch this space.........;

Iv'e Had a status on my last four vans and they have all been rubbish unless you are on high ground, why the caravan makers fit them for I don't know, we can't all be wrong, On other post on this subject there was a few recommendations for one called Magic Circle Aerial, but Iv'e never had one myself.

Buy an aerial like you have on your house the longer the better these are cheap, try B&Q, Maplins, mount it on the highest pole you can buy, about £20 from a caravan shop, when you are arriving at a site look where the aerials on nearby houses are pointed, and wether or not the are horizontal or vertically polarised and you do the same. Take a look at our gallery at our van to give you an idea. To be honest the best way is satellite, it is cheap and free now but if you want to go terrestrial this is the way to go. We always got a excellent picture using this method, no matter where we camped.

I am an expert on this subject and can get really boring about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

 hi, all I have had my status to bits and checked out the wiring and conections and no problems were found.

Upon some major dirt digging i found that the status omni directional units to be classified as next to useless. I have now a jockey wheel mounted mast and a vision plus ariel with a dedicated booster yes its about £75 all in BUT it is a million times better than the status.

Dont try to save money by using the status booster unit as this will not work with any other type of ariel as it is a specially designed unit for the status only.

 all the best Mick.
