My insurance company arranged for my 'van to have bodywork damage repaired at Crossley Coachcraft in Leyland Lancs.I arrived as arranged on a Saturday morning to be "greeted" by a staff member with real attitude problems.I was told off for not parking properly, mild compared to the berating one late arrival received.I was then subjected to further nastiness because I hadn't all the correct keys immediately to hand.

The repair is really poor with a low standard of workmanship,it will need to be returned and I am not looking forward to that one bit. When I picked up the caravan some weeks later and had to pay the excess my credit card was asked for then this chap just disappeared with it,called me to another room to enter my pin then rudely shooed me off while he finished the transaction.

I would caution anyone whose insurance company suggests this company to take note and be very wary.

I'd do as Wizard suggests, and let the CC know. I once had a damaged Ford Fiesta repaired under insurance, and had a real problem getting a decent job done.

They had quoted for a new wing, door and quarter panel, but only replaced the wing, and filled the rest.

In the end I threatened County Court action to get it put right, it still cost time and an independant report at £40 over the odds.

Later a friend told me its a common scam, and they would have charged the Insurance Company for the full (original) job.

You've got to dig your heels in, we accept poor service all too quickly in this country.

They did a good job of fitting me a new axle about10 years ago but were a little rude when telling me they hadnt made any profit from the job,( I bet ) but at that time they were part of Barrons I believe, and are now independant, one would think they would be more polite at least and more carefull in their craftmanship.

You should have called the bloke back who walked off with your credit card and asked him what the hell he was doing. This is why chip and pin is in force to stop people even touching your card so they can't obtain money illegally.

No harm updating a 10 year old thread, is there? I was just looking for Crossley's number and came across this -- just thought I'd throw in that I've always had good service from Crossleys - co-incidentally I also had an axle replaced by them, along with a full rear panel and all the trim around one of the rear wheel-wells (any guesses as to what happened?). I've also used them for servicing a few times, and am booked in to take the van up to them again in a couple weeks time for this year's service.
Other than the odd minor problem and misunderstanding which can happen in all relationships, they've been fine -- not cheap, but fine -- and they've taken action to fix any of their errors in a reasonable and timely manner, so you really can't expect any better, especially in this day and age where everyone seems to be liars and rogues (not calling Crossleys liars or rogues here!).
I've certainly had worse service, and I'm willing to recommend them -- just wish they gave loyalty discounts or a backhander for this post!!!! But then, they'd be rogues, so I guess I don't really want that ...

I agree with the above because if there is an issue at some point in the future with a unidentified transaction on your credit car, you will have issues. Notify the CC immediately of the issue with the repairer and help save someone else from the same grief.

We have been very disappointed with Crossleys as well. At first we thought that we had found a great place to take the van but never again. Repairs have not lasted and jobs charged for have not been done. I agree about the attitude problem, they just do not accept complaints

I used Crossleys of Leyland because they had good reviews. I wish I hadn't I am now facing a hefty bill for a water ingress repair that they were supposed to have done while the van was still under warranty

Agree with this. You should never, ever, let a card out of your sight - this is when 'skimming' happens.

When an insurance company recommends a repairer, they are not looking after your interests, but their own. They will have an agreement to send volumes of business to the repairer in return for lower settlement costs.

You do not have to use a recommended repairer - you would always be better off using your own trusted supplier, or one recommended to you by someone you trust, or on sight of work previously done by the supplier.

Chances are though that your own repairer will charge a bit more, but this is worth it to avoid the hassle of a sub-standard job.
