Hi again, I'm planning on fitting an external aerial tv socket to the van. Has anyone done this themselves and if so, what it an easy job or would I be better off leaving it to the professionals? Any advice appreciated.
Sorry i can't advise about the external socket, but was just wondering if you had considered the alternatives first, ie: using a status aerial or an indoor booster aerial? - Inodor booster (amplified) aerials are small things that simply sit on top of your tv ang give excellent performance (approx 10X better signal strength compared to a standard tv aerial), plus there's no fiddling or messing around trying to get a better picture. - Argos sell then starting at £14.99
Hi Grub, already got the status aerial which I will be trying before fitting the external aerial socket. It's just that a read a lot about the status aerials not being up to much. As for the booster, my Dad has just bought one for his static which he tried yesterday and said it made a slight difference to his picture, but not by much. I visited a friend in his van last week and he had an external aerial http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/redirect.asp?redir=http://www.towsure.com/default.asp?c=t800&x=7&y=3 and his picture was perfect. He said he's never had a bad reception yet. I will wait for our first venture out before I decide what to do though.
Hi Degsytroy fitted one on my caravan , it does TV and Sat connections , piece of cake to fit m8 , just make sure you work out where the cables are going to go inside the caravan before drilling any holes .
Cheers Wizard. Next to my current Interior aerial socket is a wardrobe which I would drill straight into. Is there any sort of insulation between the outer and inner panel of the van? Also, once you drilled through, did you just put some silicone around the hole or is there something else which I should use to give it a good seal?
We had opne fitted to our van for free when we bought our van. Is your van under warranty for water ingress? If so you need to check with dealer if it would invalidate any claims, even if it is nothing to do with what you have done to the van. A lot of companies will do anything to have a getout clause.

Hi Degsytroy , theres polysterene between the 2 panels , my socket is stuck on with a sort of thin foam gasket and screwed as well , i used caravan mastic from a tube ( Don't use silicone it's not a very good sealant for caravans ) on the screws and around the cable holes to make sure it was fully sealed .
i was going to ask about having one of these fitted when we have a service. we have an areial on the van and a booster. but we thought an outside socket would be usefull as some sites have a special TV socket with their ehu.
hi, if you are fitting any external socket use stainless screws and these should be long enough to reach the inner plywood skin, not just the outer skin as this pull the socket and outer skin in. Just fastening to the outer with corrode and pull away eventually. I work for a coachworks and have seen many just fitted with small screws into the alu. or grp outer and the outer skin will move really easy if not anchored into the inner

I had an external aerial fitted on a van I used to own quite a few years ago, it was fitted in the battery/ mains connection box and the cable went through the opening that the mains cable did. I'm not to sure of xactly how it was fitted but was thinking if one was fitted in the same place then there would be no need to drill through the van walls, only through the plastic of the said box. A coax cable could then be run under the seating or whatever to where you need the TV positioning.
easy to do fitted mine under the floor, screwed into the wood, this way no holes in the bodywork skin.passed the cable through a vent by removing 4 squares in it,saves drilling the floor.to be sure of no water going into the fitting fit a blank plug with a rubber cap over it when not in use.
Vision Plus External TV Socket connects an outside antenna to an internal TV point. Connections protected from the weather by an hinged cover. Comes complete with 5 meters of coaxial cable. T615 £9.32 £10.95 inc VAT

------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
I fitted one of these on my last caravan. fitted it to the outside of the front storage locker for two reasons, one, I had the mast attached to the front "A" frame and secondly there was not fear of any water ingress into the body of the caravan. Put a backing plate on it to stop any chance of it pulling out of the GRP. I ran the cable under the floor with cable clips and drilled up through the wardrobe floor. I put a grommet each side of the floor which allowed for a dry and tight fitting.
A seller on ebay does em regular for tv and sat - dead easy to do - if you are worried go through the battery box, floor or external cupboard space if you have one. I will be doing one soon as Im getting a sat set up and then dont have to have it thru the window!
