I've just bought a Bailey Hunter 500/6 and, although i haven't had it confirmed, they tell me it has a fully laden weight of 1300kg and unladen around 1050kg.

I'm also buying a bigger car, and am looking at a Vectra hatch or estate. My favoured engine is the 1.9CDTi, and by all accounts it isgood for towing. However, it is only just big enough to pull the hunter at 85%, but I suspect the 150bhp- engine will give me the power i need.

The car and aravan will cost me in the region of the £15000 together, so I want to get it right. I don't want to buy a car that's too big either.

We have three kids, so our weight (clinically obese, lol) must be taken into consideartion along with our luggage and stuff in the carvan must be taken into account.

I can find no information regards weight for the Bailey which is a 1998 model, although the dealer said they would post a brochure if they could find one.

I'm relatively new to caravanning, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have used the whattowcar.com matchimng service, which says the combo is perfect, but would like to get some comments from people who have actually done it.

Many thanks.

Try www.parkers.co.uk. It won't tell you the weight of your caravan, but it'll tell you the weight of the car and what weight you can tow.  I found that whattowcar.com told me every combination was ideal!

My previous car was a Vectra 1.9 CDti150 Sri and as Stu says, it just laughs at it. My current car is a Zafira with the same engine, and it's also a great tow car. If you want a Vectra, it's probably best to go for the estate version as it's got a longer wheelbase, which makes a lot of difference.

buy a signum 2.2 dti direct far better than the vectra and they suffer a lot less can-bus probs than the vectra.

working for vauxhall in newport we see a lot of probs with the vectra c model year 2005 on and its mostly 40k miles onwards (all the fiat engine stuff)

all i can say is beware of high mileage models and stick to dealers that offer a good network q warranty
