The van stolen on Saturday was not stolen from Sandy Balls. I cant for the life of me remember what it was called, but its not one I've heard of. It looked basically like a clearing in the forest on the TV and certainly nothing in the way of security was apparent. The coupe who had the van stolen worked the markets and were at Wimborne when the van went missing. I'm sure their movements would have been checked by the thieves for some time prior to the theft.
As stated by Avanman, the New Forest is BIG! It starts near Bournemouth/Poole in the West to Southampton Water in the East and from almost into Winchester and Salisbury in the north and right down to the coast on its southern edge. Its criss-crossed all over with little lanes and tracks. Its covered by 2 (maybe 3) different police forces, and they can't monitor every little bit of it. People come and go through the Forest every day and from March to November its full of tourists and caravans. Nobody really takes much notice of them.
When we were first down here, locals used to warn us about the "pikies", and I said I'd never seen any!! Having come down from Doncaster where convoys of diddicoys are a common sight, I honestly thought they were exaggerating. When I was told to look out for "tree surgeons" the penny dropped - I'd been seeing lots of those on a daily basis and taken no notice of them as a Tree Surgeon in the north is a respectable profession!
