Hi, have started repairing my sprite Musketeer from were I left off from the end of last year. Now that the decent weather is coming and I`ve got two weeks off to finish the repairs. One of the repairs is too the locker at the front of the caravan were you put your gas bottles. Does anyone know if the locker door is fitted to the caravan with a hinge, as mine is held together with some gaff tape and some wire.

We've owned 2 Sprites.

The 1989 Major - the hinge broke just before we sold it on in 2002 to my Brother, he repaired it. The 1991 Musketeer - when we bought it in 2002 the hinge had already broken and been repaired and tape of some sort had been put along the hinge to strengthen it. I never looked underneath the tape to see how solid the hinge was.

I guess it must be a common fault with them. I think my Brother just bought a new hinge and fitted it.

Piano hinge will be the best to use as it is stronger along the whole lid, go to local DIY shop, repair as Romany instructs, if possible get the brass hinge as it will last longer than the normal metal ones!

When fitting the piano hinge would it be best to use a pot rivot gun or is there another way of doing it? Not sure if using the pot rivot will split the plastic.

Thats why i used some 1" battening behind the lip on the van and the locker lid then drilled relief holes through the plastic that way the load is spread by screwing through piano hinge and plastic into wood batten effectively pinching the plastic between hinge and wood

Thanks guys for all the advice. Repaired the front locker yesterday. Looks a hell of alot better than having the ghastly red gaff tape along the top of it.

hi guys ive got to repair my hinges on my front locker, i know its a daft question but do you put the hing on the front locker door first or the other way around to the van locker first, the hinges dont seem very wide and being left handed and having hands like shovels does not help.

hi hubby put the hinges on the hatch/cover first using rivet gun, then fixed the cover to the van with left hand. He said that he did drill the holes out for the rivets first

good luck
