I have Beth to thank for setting me off. I love the cheltenhams and really want one but I have a few questions for some of you clever bods on here.

Practically speaking in a caravan that is 34 years old,if its been well maintained/refurbished and is in current good condition what is there that can go wrong and not be replaceable i.e the caravan has to be scrapped.

I know sometime in the past the towing ball size was changed to metric. Does anyone know if the cheltenham is the new size as I cannot remember when it was changed. If its the old size can you still buy a towball to fit.

Such things as undergear/roadlights etc are they all reparable with todays  things.

Probably some daft questions here. If so,sorry.

Regards Robin

hello!!

sorry got a bit over excited when I saw your post.

As you know I am by no means an expert but I can tell you what I know based on my experience so far.

I have had a carpenter friend round who built me a new window sill and he checked the van for damp and found absolutely no signs of any,

We went out in it for the first time last weekend, in the really awful weather and we were all totally warm, dry and snug for the duration.

I have had a new standard tow bar fitted onto my focus and even as a poor lowly woman I have had no probs hitching the van on and off my car, in fact whaere I store it is a bit of a tricky space to get into and my van is so lightweight I can push her in by myself!!

The bad points so far are that there are no electrics but I am going to get a mains electric kit and maybe try and do it otherwise I will get someone else to do it and the exterior is a mess but I am having it resprayed in july for £600

So far I have no regrets and am smitten, I attractec quite a lot of attention at the campsite, some good some downright cheeky!! I am sure I wil;l encounter more problems than a new caravan but it has so much character I think its worth it!

Oh the lights all work, i bought a new set of bulbs just to be sure and  strippeed back the wire so it was new wires I was connecting and they seem to work fine so far.

The chassis has alot of surface rust which I am rubbing down and painting but it has not eroded and is pretty solid as is the timber floor.

Hope that helps!

Beth

Also email the cheltenham owners club, I am not a member but emailed a question about gas and they replied. They seem really keen on recruiting budding cheltenham enthusiasts so drop them a line

Hi Beth just been to see a 1970 Puku 2. It was very good condition for its age. Outside immaculate with a respray and double glazed windows fitted. all new rubber surrounds.Chromework good. Inside it seemed very good no obvious bad signs but of courseits 36 years old. I am hoping one of the technical guys will come on and tell me about spares etc. and tyres and things like that.

Regards Robin

WOW you are taking me back. Years ago my ex husband and I were into classic Volvo's and attended many shows and exhibitions - we had a Waterbuck and then a couple of years later a Sable. What fantastic vans, I had them both double glazed and renovated, hot water installed and the Waterbuck had a "bunk" and a shower. Although heavy vans there really is little to go wrong and I have known them "brought back" after staning 20 years in a field!! With that solid wood floor they are a little heavy by todays standards but must have been built for the Gentry as who could afford to tour abroad back then? That is why they have doors either side so you can alight safely. Now as a 61 year old single lady, I drive a Romahome Duo but my mind often returns to the happy days spent in the Cheltenham. Tina and John ??? who lived in a small village beyond Christchurch used to restore them. Wonder if they are still around?

Hi Sandbanks. Actually you would be surprised about the weight they are actually much lighter than todays caravans which have got heavier again. The Puku weighs lass than 1000 kgs. Tina and John Bradley are still around. I think I am correct in saying he is the chairman now of the Cheltenham Owners Club. It was really nostalgic to sit in the Puku.Still got the gaslights. My heart says buy this caravan but my head says look its 36 years old and I am not `handy`.

Regards Jim

i am so not handy either but i have no regrets whatsoever about buying my waterbuck

Like i said earlier because they are so old they are so simply made therefore so easy to repair and maintain

My focus could apparently tow duble the weight of my waterbuck, its a very lightweight van!!

Go on robin/jim i need a cheltenham ally!!!
