We need an alarm system for our Caravan for insurance purposes - E&L wont insure us otherwise.  Obviously we don't want to pay over the odds for one but we don't want an alarm that offers only the basics.  Can anyone please advise us?  Thanks in advance

Depends want kind of security alarm you want. If it is to warn of anyone braking in then you could try these.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DOOR-WINDOW-ALARM-SET-pack-of-3-BRAND-NEW_W0QQitemZ6060104825QQcategoryZ41969QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

We had someone who broke in twice through the rear window of our last caravan to use as somewhere to sleep. We went and got these and put one on the rear window and it wasn`t broken in again after that.

The dreaded E & helL are quite specific I believe in the type of alarm that you need, probably cheaper to cancel your insurance with them and then get a new policy with someone like CC who don't insist on such high levels of security. Otherwise, for your sake please make sure you actually ask them which alarms are acceptable. I do hope that you will never need one.
Don't get me wrong I'm all in favour of taking reasonable precautions, but other peoples experience of your insurance company reveals that even when you do comply with their requests in the event of a claim it is down to you that you were compliant at the time of the loss and they seem to squirm more than most insurance companies.
Good luck
Mike

Hi Mike

Could you please tell me who CC are?  We find it very difficult in Northern Ireland to find companies to insure caravans or cars.

If you want to p**s everyone off on every site you visit, fit an alarm.

In 40 years of sites I have heard them go off about 5 times and cars 10. On one, the caravan next door started to scream about 10 minutes ofter the owners drove off. My wife and I looked around the 'van for signs of break in but of course, there was none. So we went off to the bar to get away from the noise.

An hour later it was still going and the site owner was there along with half the other unhappy campers. Eventually one of them opened the 'van up and disconnected the alarm.

Some 6 hours later the van owner and family arrived back to find a large note of complaint and info. Instead of accepting this he charged off shouting his space had been desecrated. Twenty minutes later he was back with the site owner who had told him he could go.

Within minutes another caravan reversed onto the pitch.

Unfortunate and very annoying, the better systems will have intelligent auto rearming, ie the system will omit any faulty detector on diagnostics check and also should only (ideally) rearm 2 to 3 times with a timed siren of 15 minutes maximum at one go.

I've just changed my insurance to C&CC from E&L they require your alarm to be tilt protected. saved a few quid as well..As for them being a nuisance if you have them fitted properly they won't go off. I find that barking dogs are more of a nuisance and car alarms and generators and screaming kids (got 2 myself) and loud televisions and peple in their sound proof awnings (so they think) at 2 in the morning,,, remind me again why we go camping...
