Hi everyone

Just got back from a great trip to Dorset. Great holiday but a big problem. My 2 year old son has just learnt how to open the caravan door. One morning found him in the awning at 6 o'clock, just wandering around, taking in the early morning sunshine. Danger is from there though he could easilly get out of the awning and...........I don't want to think further than that!!!

Has anyone else had (and found a solution) to this problem?

Can you fit a better lock for the caravan door? Can you block the door? I don't want to compromise safety for escape purposes, but we have to find a way to stop his morning travels.

FWIW it's a Swift Challenger 530SE and to be honest the "lock" is a bit of a joke anyway so I really don't mind changing it if it comes to that.

Many thanks.

SB

Only thing I can think of is a small bolt out of reach

Failing that maybe a straight jacket

Hi we have a Fiamma Security lock on the outside of the caravan door, but when we're in the van we can open the top of the door to reach outside and pull the security lock up a bit so the bottom of the caravan door cannot be opened from the inside. So if my little one pushes on the door it wont move because of the lock then we just close the top of the door & lock it in place.  Hope I explained that Ok.

if you caravan ghas the stable type door then how about fastening the bottom then lock the top door this way he may be able to open the top bit of the door but the bottom bit might be a bit harder for him to open.

Cannot help your problem but thought i would share a tale with you to show how kids minds work lol.

Many years ago when we had our first van my youngest was 18 months old. We had put her in the awning with her toys, everything secure and fastened while we did the washing up. Only been in there a matter of moments when my wife looked out of the window to see our daughter emrging onto the field. We quickly brought her back into the awning but could not work out how she had got out as everything was still fastened and secure. We put her back and i went outside the awning to see if we could work it out. Again my 18month old appeared outside, apparently found it great fun to crawl under the caravan. We immedeately went out and bought a draft skirt( i think thats what its called)  to put along the caravan when we had the awning up.

Is funny now but was quite frightening at the time.........

Aldi sell (or used to) little window locks that you can set so an alarm goes off if they are opened- perfect for the van door though you and the neighbours may get a rude awakening!

What about a motion sensor type alarm - that way you will know whenever he is up and about - theres lots of potential trouble for a toddler inside a caravan as well as outside !
