Richie

Usually anywhere north of Lyon will have similar weather to the UK, except that when the sun is out it is usually hotter. Perhaps more over towards the west coast/Loire might be a good bet. We have a couple of contributors on this site who own campsites in that region and I am sure they will be able to advise more on weather. The longer ferry crossings from Portsmouth might suit you but they do cost a lot more than Dover/Calais so you have to do your sums re fuel saving and tolls. Driving in France is so much more relaxed than in the UK so don't be too concerned about distance unless you just don't want a long drive.

Richie,

I live near Portsmouth and it works out considerably cheaper for me to drive to Dover for the ferry, with the subsequent extra fuel costs, than it is to get the ferry from Portsmouth.

As for the weather it is a bit hit and miss, as David says you really need to get down to the Loire to get milder weather than here in the UK, but even there it's not guaranteed to be warm.

HI Richie,

With a bit of looking around you should be able to find some tour operators that have free caravans on some routes - out of high season you just can't beat the prices given by touring cheques.

As for weather - I too have found the weather better in the Loire - and also would say that driving on French roads is calmer, easier and quicker - the roads are a lot less crowded and on the toll roads you can travel larger distances, quicker as they are direct and not crowded.

Hope this helps - Melanie
