Hi,i,ve got a satellite dish for my van, but need a pole or something to attach it, does anyone know where i can get one from, or something similar. I've seen the tripods, but am unsure if it will be ok because they are low on the ground.

   Thanks for your help  Jane

Hi Jane

Normally the height doesn't matter, unless there is an obstruction directly in front of the dish.

I saw someone using the tripod off a set of worklights .You can get them on Ebay for a lot less than the proper satellite tripods.

Hi jane

I use an old camera tripod, tied down with a tent peg and some guy rope, works a treat. The height off the ground doesn't matter.

Hi Jack/Jane,

Any pole will do the job really, We use a spare awning pole hammered firmly into the ground next to the jockey wheel, with a simple cable-tie around it and the jockey wheel for added support. - works fine.

The tripods do work well also, but as you say the height can be a factor on a busy campsite.

HI, I bought a loudspeaker tripod (the type that they use in pubs for live music).

i had it from a music shop that hired out equipment to bands , it is all aluminium construction,so hardly any weight, folds down to 4ft high but extends to about 7ft, and all for  £10.

I use an old surveying tripod with the top converted to hold the dish. Did however buy a satellite finder at the week-end set up the dish and pointed it in the general direction of ones close to the site 2 minutes later Sky TV and a perfect picture.

Got a tripod from towsure. About 40 quid. Not taken it away yet. but tried it at home.seems a good job. was thinking about getting a sat finder but have decided not to as although first attempt took about 15 mins to position  dish , second go I found the satellite immediately when using a compass.

lookin forward to watchin the final stages of the world cup in a couple of weeks in my awning. COME ON ENGLAND!!!!!!!!!!

Dare I say the Jockey wheel stem makes an ideal and free pole as long as you can pitch the van facing roughly south?

I brought a rotary line for £9.99 from argos took the line off, and drilled a hole in the pole and put a screw in it to stop it spinning around.Turn it upside down and Hey presto!! a tripod... Not my idea though I stole it from something I read on a link from here of how to get satelite signal...went to devon for a week at whitsun set up satelite pointed it east at 140 degrees and tried and tried to get signal for about an hour over 2 days but in the end gave up so now need a satelite finder as tried the compass attempt and couldn't find signal, but there was alot of trees surrounding the site??

I also use the rotary washing line.

Always try to park away from the dish pointing at trees.

Sometimes use a sattilite finder, but usualy ok with a compass.

I always put it at the bottom of the pole, more stable & does'nt show to much.

I use to put an arial up on a ploe, with sattilite I've always got a clear picture and can set it up quicker.

I recently bought a 12 volt lcd tv & 12 volt (not cheap) box, so I can do none ehu sites and rallies.

go to a car boot sale DO NOT SPEND £50 on a tripod. get a sturdy camera tripod (i saw 6 at our boot this sunday) only about a fiver.when you do-- unscrew the bolts at the bottom of the legs get three (generally 6mm bolts) and 3 big washers-- drill a hole in each washer--(this is for 3 metal tent pegs to go through as stabilisers)bolt washers to the legs- once you have mounted the dish you are away.mine looks bl**dy professional and only cost a fiver. thats £45 quid saved and that means an extra week away.
