Hi We were thinking of buying a hobby caravan but have heard bad\ reports.

Is there any one that has got a hobby caravan,?

Are they very easy to break in to or the same as any other van?

thanks

I have heard that they are the prefered van of the travelling community & therefore insurance can be hard to obtain. Also lots of sites wont accept them because of this.

The main problem with the Hobby vans is with twin axles, they are very desirable. CC will insure them. Don't get one of the 2.5m wide ones as they are illegal to tow here unless you have a vehicle over 3500kg kerb weight. Max width here to tow with car/4x4 is 2.3m.
But they are good vans. Spec is quite different from UK vans in some ways, so it depends what you want. Servicing can be a problem unless you have a dealer nearby.

If we had a dealer, and they did the layout we want, I would seriously consider getting one.

We have a twin wheel Eldiss and have no trouble with sites etc I think there was only one once that wouldn't accept twin axles, we seriously considered a Hobby when we were first looking but after some research on net and mags etc we decided against it, not so much for the break in side but more that they are highly nickable as the travellers like them, the insurance was high too.

Hi,

As far as I can tell you can break into most caravans with a nail-file -  so I wouldnt let that out you off....security doesn't seem to be high on the agenda with caravan manufacturers....as I matter of fact, I didnt lock my van when away from it, preferiing to lose the contents of it rather then them trash the door lock also.

The contents can always be replaced easily - caravan repairs can be a total nightmare......

If someones intent on getting in, then a flimsy caravan door lock wont stop them, but it will certainly mean they'll not think twice about spoiling your prized possesson as well....

Even if the door is secure, then they can jemmy open a window with relative ease...

I dont want to scare you off but I think that being realistic about the proposition is just as important.

Ive never had a problem,  in fact I rarely lock my car door  - the same logic applies - I thief wont think twice about trashing one of your windows if they are intent on getting in - so why create the hasssle for yourself. The worst that can happen is a drunk sleeps in your car/van and if thats the case then at least they will probalbly be there in the morning to confront -  either way.

For the beast part though I've found most people on campsites are gems who will go out of their way to help if possible - dont let my cynical viewpoints sour a potentially really enjoyable "hobby"...no pun intended!!!!

On a recent trip abroad I was quite surpised about how casual they seem to be on the continent re caravan security. I dont know whether UK really is a bad place to be these days or whether its just paranoia on our part, but continental caravan security seems to reflect a 'safer' perception of thier civilisation that you see over there. Exterior hinge pins on doors are only one example of what we might call low security. I guess it reminds me of how it used to be here - basic security to deter the casual offender.

You could say the same thing about the plethora of CCTV cameras in our cities, the density of burglar alarms on modern houses, and so on.

Why do we put up with this level of intrusion into the enjoyment of our property? As a nation we can fund plenty of speed cameras, but not track down the small minority who seem to be able to make a living out of these high-value items, and destroy the sense of well-being of thousands of innocent, hard working folk in the process.

For what its worth, my perception on the hobby is that anything that is a quesiton mark over insurance now is sure to become a real issue later. There are othe rnice vans out there without that hanging over their head.
