ive just disturbed somebody (t at ~t) attempting to break into my carava. the van is in myside garden and has been broken into before. i have bolted the door and all the windows and have an alarm fitted, the pir type. well i steered on the side of caution and just shone a torch on them then called the police. i didnt fancy getting i a fight with them as they were more than likeky carrying a screw driver or other weapons. i have not put the van into storage as it is an old but verry good condition abi ace award and the srorage would nearly be more than i paid for the van.but its my van.

well what security measures do you all use and did i do the right thing

If i had my van in my garden i would set some trip wires. i would have a camera set up to my tv in the bedroom, get an alert dog and when he hears something i would check on tv and then let my dog out to say hello to them. ....

Preferably a hungry Rottweiler....  and before anyone shouts all the Rotty's I know are really soft and would probably just lick you to death.

We are in the process of organising the back garden to take the van.

We have been on various "secure" sites over the years and have been broken into a few times. At least in the garden it is outside the kitchen window and I can keep my beady eye on it. The council have very thoughtfully placed a street lamp at the bottom of the garden which means the garden is never fully dark. ( I now have several plant asking for sleeping pills) and we plan to secure it to a post with the hitchlock as well as wheel clamping it and having an alarm.

As I get older, I realise that there will always be someone who is going to try to get something for nothing, whether is is the van or the house. If it happens at least it is not someones life.

Stealing or breaking in to somebody elses property is illegal too!

SWIFT22.

The most likely outcome in this day and age if you did set a snare is that you would be done for GBH etc, he would get off scott free and then sue the pants off you for his hurt feelings!!

yeah, much better to take them out permanently so they cant complain.......

back up the rotty with a rabid rhino,. That ought to do it.

Why do these idiots keep having a go at caravans? The stuff inside most of em is worth so little.

1 in 5 new vans get stolen - so who is buying these things? There must be a market or they wouldnt get pinched....

The local police actually did a first class operation here on a local traveller site. It was an expensive business with more than one force involved, dawn raids etc the lot. They raided one family on the site

They recovered money and goods worth in excess of £1m on the site. Including two BMW X5s, a Porsche and half a million in stolen cash.

The villains who have been sentenced so far got ...er......18 months to 3 years, they will be out much earlier with good behaviour of course.

Somehow not all neighbours react to lights and alarms.
I often wondered whether it would be useful to link an infrared switch (like the ones connected to the lights at your front door) to a few nice water jets/sprinklers around the caravan.
But don't forget to switch them of when at home and when you want to enter the caravan yourself.

I know this is not a regular method, but still I would like to see the nuisance for the culprits...
and it still does not prevent you from installing a regular alarm inside the van.

you can pick up dummy cameras with little red lights on them that look very realistic for about 20 pounds but personally i would go for a wolf pit with an hungry rotty in there for good measure

Not too sure about your idea 007cammie, imagine the result when a cat walks underneath and completes the circuit, or a dog christening the wheel!
