me and my hubby discussing this post,  from a woman's point of view caravanning can sometimes feel like you are not getting a break from home, eg - i always cook in the van,...im always cleaning/sweeping the van (its just like being at home)..we go away most weekends and have been away for about 10 weekends on the trot.

We have a 2 week holiday booked to Scottish highlands (in a cottage) in September to look forward to, I think we will do the same next year,....even though we love our van, it can sometimes be a bit confined and i think you need a little change.

Maybe compromise  - treat her to a lovely week away to a non- van holiday but still keep the van and use it too.

My wife is not best keen on camping either, I just leave her at home and take the kids.

Simple as that.

I often go alone  with the children and leave husband at home.  I think you could do both if you compromised at both ends?

Why not...book a fabulous site in Europe - get some recommendations about ones that have really fab facilities that are cockroach free - and make sure it's not too far from a reasonably cheap airport to fly into. While you are booking the site, book a flight arriving into that airport 2 days after you are due to arrive at the site. You and the lad drive to the site having some quality male bonding time, set up at a leisurely pace, get all neat and tidy, ship shape and Bristol fashion. Visit the local market and stock up on beautiful fresh produce that can quickly and easily be turned into nice meals e.g. salads, cured meats, barbeque stuff etc....oops nearly forgot, gorgeous bottles of local vino chilled/chambré-d to perfection.  Drive to airport and collect wife - deliver to perfect caravan where all is ready, deliver fabulous meal and lots of compliments (to be on the safe side). Day before leaving and before caravan "take down", have an ensuite room booked in a local hotel, with pretty good beauty treatments added to the package. Deposit wife there and leave to ripen as you take down and prepare to leave the site. Collect wife refreshed and happy before driving back to UK - en famille.

Probably cheaper to go for a package to somehwere nice, but you'd miss the male bonding thing.

Having enjoyed a really well managed and comfortable crossing of the channel by Brittany Ferries in June, and then enjoyed stress free driving on the French autoroutes, both my wife and I would be very hard pressed to go back to being b******d about at airports.

Neither of us can stand the perversity of the airport staff at foreign airports and to be frank, the ones at British airports aren't much better especially their apparent indifference to the fact that I am disabled. Brittany Ferries on the other hand, couldn't have been more caring.

It means that we will not be visiting our much loved secret little corners of Tenerife and Majorca but hey, France is such a diverse country with such a lot to offer that we see her as a high quality replacement.
