hi all just had a week in bridlington and a very close shave .  on wednesday night /thurs morn  one of my daughters awoke us as me and my wife were sleeping in awning [kids in van] and said she could smell gas .so i went in caravan to see what was happening and nearly chocked .the van was full of gas from the battery which had burst and the charger was still charging it .we shipped out of there very quick and all 5 of us slept in car until i could examine properly in morning .the fumes were that bad that you couldnt even go within 3 ft of windows without yours eyes watering and not being able to breathe so i knocked of all power opened all windows and doors and we slept in car .in morning when all gas had gone and i examined battery there was a hole in top of battery wer gas had escaped i think we were very lucky my daughter woke when she did it was an awful experiance and id just like people to make sure there batterys are in good order as id hate it to happen to anyone else as they may not be as lucky ...DAZ

That really is a scary thing to happen and i'm sure everyone who has read your thread hopes to god that the same thing does'nt happen to them!

Unfortunately it's impossible to say what was at fault, the battery......the charger......or maybe a combination of both!? - As michael says it's a good idea to check the charger, but if it were me i'd replace the charger aswell as getting a new battery just to be sure that the same thing does'nt happen again.

all the best.

I thought that if the battery bubbles over it simply catches the liquid in the supplied drip tray. If more than that the liquid then empties through the weep hole in the battery box. I thought it was supposed to be sealed from the inside so no gas can get in a sort of fail safe device. Dazparty I would really get it checked something is amiss. Did the battery have a tube to take away the excess fluid and gas build up this normally is then poked through the weep hole in the base of the battery box.

IIRC the gas given off during charging is hydrogen (which is supposed to be odourless) and it is highly inflammable. The smell is from other stuff in the boiling acid caused by overcharging. I had a car battery explode on me last year - it was on charge and I made the mistake of disconnecting the charger without switching it off. The spark from the crocodlie clip ignited the hydrogen with a 'crack!' (not a 'bang!') and the blast split the battery apart at the seams, dumping acid all over me and the engine bay. I had the sense to strip off pretty quickly but it still ruined my overalls and clothes despite dumping them in water ASAP.

thanks for all the advice  it seems that the battery was bone dry [my own daft mistake for not checking] and the build up of gas was because the charger just kept charging so will be replacing for one that knocks off when battery is full the van is 18 yrs old so it probably wants changing anyway but it will be turned of at night time from now on anyway.were away again at weekend so it definatley hasnt put us off just made us more careful thanks DAZ

the acid boiling and the reaction with the plates gives off sulpher dioxide (SO2 for the chemically minded) whish has a bad egg type smell to it, mixed with the vapour of boiling acid isnt a nice mix
