I was quite excited about our purchase of a bradcot classic awning and got it for a great price brand new on e bay. We are new caravanners so no experience of full size awnings. Anyway after a couple of practice sessionns we arrived on site and encountered 2 problems.
1. The easy poles bent when trying to tension them, we put it up in windy conditions but we are gutted as we cant dismantle them. Can you replace the individual bent poles.anyone else had this problem?
2. After a heavy downpour of rain we awoke to find the awning flooded with all our things. How do people prevent this as no one elses seemed to be flooded. The pitch was hardstanding. Thanks for listening !!!!
sorry to hear about your trip being ruined, as for the bradcot poles theres nothing you could have done they are a new concept and I think they are rubbish. As for the awning being flooded again its just been bad luck if there is heavy rain and your pitch gets sodden I dont think any awning will keep out the water its not coming through the fabric its seeping under the skirting all you can do is peg down and hope for the best. we usualy lift anything that can get soaked and put it on a table or chair hardstandings do tend to dry out quicker than grass but we were flooded for a couple of days on a cc site in scarborough hope you have not been put off awnings are an excellent extension to your caravan and Im sure with decent poles you will love it
The awning poles, if you extend them to far they are really hard to retract. We were told not to extend them fully and have never had to. some are three pieces so extend both bits equally. You have pushed grey bit marked with arrow to try to tetract them.
Ours dont bend when up have had to be careful when windy though.
We have just bent our second set whilst in windy conditions in France. We have bent the interim roof supporting ones as the rain was so heavy it collected in pools on the roof and bent the poles and the wind lifted the uprights and bent them. I agree with Jock I think they are rubbish and are seriously considering replacing them with a steel set. Bradcot will replace any pole you require at a price!
My Bradcot Classic is now 6 years old and it was bought it with the "Easy Pole" system.
In all that time we have never come even near to bending them and can only deduce that Bradcot have reduced the quality of the pole material being used in the manufacture.
Once you get through to them, you will find their customer care department very helpful but expect to have to try several times before you get through.
Sorry to hear about your awning problems. We bought a Bradcot Classic last year and have been very disapointed. As yet we have had no problems with the poles bending but have had a lot of water ingress. We fully understand about weathering (we have had cotton canvas in the past) but think that Bradcot don't do all they could to improve the difficulties. Initially we had wet pouring through the awning rail strip but this actually 'weathered' quite quickly. It is taking much longer for other areas to imrove - although they are slowly. We can still see water coming through the stitching on the zips. We have just returned from sunny Scotland however we didn't end up with wet curtains this time when it rained heavily. As for other issues - the stitching came away on the bottom of a door zip in May and I've repaired it, now we've discovered the stitching at the top of the front corner seam is coming apart. We're very careful with our kit and have always taken care when pitching, handling, packing etc. I intend to send Bradcot photos of my parting seam along with some of my views of their product. We also have an annexe which suffered in the same way re water ingress - and that's meant for sleeping in. To my mind it's not fit for purpose...
We opted for a Dorema full awning and an Inaca porch - not much difference in the prices - Inaca are NOT cheap. We went for the alloy poles for the fullawning - with our fingers crossed and invested in the storm straps which clip in at the sides ( they fit both the awning and the porch, you could have knocked me down with a feather!). We had a couple of awful weather days - wet and windy (monsoon like) on the top of a slightly exposed hill. The awning was fantastic - no rain in, no bendy poles - WELL DONE DOREMA!
The porch this weekend under went a similar drenching and typhoon in the Vale of York, same effect, nothing came in and the poles remained straight, WELL DONE INACA
annegor - never had any problems with our classic like you have and we have the annexe as well and that been great although when someone sleeps in there you do get a bit of condensation. We als have the bradcot portico XL porch as the annexe fits that as well and thats been fine.
The only water we had on holiday in cornwall this year waas from rain at night which came up through ground sheet as we were slightly sloping but as regards awning never had any water through it. In fact due to material it literally runs off and doesn't soak in you can almost shake off rain droplets.
We did have small amount run down side of van through awning rail but that was because when we put it up one night the wind cight it and pulled at awning rail and caused it to leak but that was all sorted under warranty at the dealers.
Our big Bradcott Classic awning, (which we sold when we bought the new caravan in favour of a Portico XL porch awning) had carbon? nylon? plastic? poles, which were light, strong, easy to use and we never ever had any problems with them. The Portico has this easy-use system and, quite frankly, the poles are a pig to manage. Someone was living in fairyland when they named it Easy-Use
