Ive only had this caravan for a few months and Im already naffed off by the steadies. It seems like hours of turning on the handle for no effect.
And then theres three more after that one!
Why do they make them so low geared?
Ive heard some peeps use a cordless drill to do the steadies - anyone doing this? If so where did you get the attachment from please, and does it work OK - my front steadies look quite a bit recessed under the van........ not sure if a drill would reach....
thanks,
Geoff

Hi, they are geared as such so they stay in place once lowered, I toyed with the idea of a cheap rechargeable drill and an adapter, but it's only 4 minutes out of my life per trip so I didn't bother.
Hubby doesn't mind doing the manual winding either for what is basically a once a blooming year thing anyhoo....don't ask!
Also the drill just seems to be a bit of extra weight we can ill afford to use on something that's only gonna be used twice while we're away, (winding up....and winding down), and means I can bung in more knickers
Although in actual fact....the drill thingy would be used FOUR times each year...winding up when hitching...winding down when pitching...up to re-hitch...and down once back in the storage pitch.....nah....still aint worth it
All this being said though....the major expense of the wonderful recon Powrtouch mover was worth every single penny coz with me being a decrepit and hubby with his hernia waiting to be sorted, there was no way our two weeks in Cornwall could have happened this year without it. Marvellous and coz we love it so-o-o-o-o much we might even nip down to give Ellie a trip around the storage pitch now and then just for the fun of it I'm kiddding!
Yes, we use a drill/adapter and wouldn't be without it.
It means that even I (Mrs Ulti-mates) and Master Ulti-mates (age 10) can do the steadies, whilst Mr Ulti-mates can be free to demonstrate his manliness with other tasks.
Having a drill and adaptor means the kids are more than happy to wind the legs down. OK I know it don't take long but while they are winding down the legs I can be guzzling my 1st beer
Seriously though, I use the drill for the Wurmi pegs too.
At first when I saw someone using a cordless drill I thought what a prat. Then the price of the drill came right down so I bought one. I use it and very pleased too, but I still think when I see someone else uses them (prat) but who cares.
hi to save you money and time make your own drill bit.take a common socket that fits snug, find a long nut and bolt with a dia shaft that will fit into your drill chuck, find some washers x 2.fit all together and away you go.hate winding legs down would not be without mine,i use a cordless 9V drill.as said dont get carried away in use.saved you £6.
------------- the only silly question is the one you do not ask.
I prefer to use the wheelbrace to lower the stabilisers, at least then I know they're where I want them. What's wrong with a couple of minutes on a wheelbrace?? I guess you all pack the charger for your drills do you? Just think about all the extra weight you're piling into the unit. Must be a couple of unwanted kilos in a drill & charger, if they're any good that is.
As you get older or more infirm its well worth carrying the extra weight of a mover cordless drill or any other accessory that enables caravaning to be continued
I always need the drill to do the odd job including the latest screw in bolts(B & Q) used as awning pegs.
thanks guys, interesting about the awning pegs - thats for hard standing surfaces - right? Or do you screw down into earth pitches as well? ( and dont the site owners object to all those holes all over their nicely concreted caravan pitch? )
