We are thinking of getting a cover for our caravan. However looking around the yard we are storing our caravan, covers are conspicuous by their absence. The only downside I can see is that they need to be stored somewhere while not in use. How difficult are they to fit and remove? How much space do they take up when not in use? Does anyone have any thoughts on them good or bad to help us reach a descision? I see Towsure do them for about £100 but had a quote of £280 for one. The latter requiring Make and model of the caravan, I assume it would be better than one to fit a "size range" of caravan. Are the cheap ones any good?
I must admit I think nearly £300 for a cover for my caravan that cost me £2400 seems a bit ott.

Mine fits into a bag about twice the size of a services kit bag if that is any help. I have put mine on single handed, but it ain't easy. With 2 people and a couple of poles (broom handles or similar) its quite easy providing there's not a gale blowing. The higher estimate would be tailor made to fit your model van so the estimate sounds about right. I got a fair discount by ordering at the Earls Court show a few years ago. Think it was £235 for a fairly standard 16' body 4 berth. Picture of van in profile. Can't comment on the cheap ones as never had one but think you need to look at, are they non scratch inside, are they breathable to allow condensation to disipate and can you access the van door when fitted. All these things you need to consider and they would be features of the tailor made one. Whether it's worth it is only a question you can answer and I think a lot depends on where you park it. I feel that they do protect from the winter weather but also from the birds from which mine suffered considerably as it was under trees, like wise the green chlorophill from the leaves...............Mick

Hi, I guess most people don't use them beacause they don't want to pay out the couple of hundred £ and don't see the point, But seeing the vans with them in the storage I use when they uncover them is obvious, No green, No bird droppings, No black streaks, Very few are totally waterproof, Most are weatherproof and breathable which is ok, the other thing people forget is UV stable and proof, Means it wont discolour itself and wont allow your van to fade either. I have used a multilayer non-woven that cost £120 for a 20ft van and it's been great, No scratching, No tears and definately less washing..

Hi, I got a Protec cover and it has its upside and downside. Its not a five minute job getting it on and needs two people. I can, however get it off single handed. Having got it off we do need to then go home before setting off to leave it there (we are in a storage site) and go home before putting back into storage to get it. In our case that is not the end of the world as the distance is not great. I don't think you would want to take it with you. On the upside it keeps the van lovely and clean in storage where it is under trees and cleaning a badly dirty van takes a fair while. One of the main things that has not been mentioned is the sunlight issue. I notice that on our storage site most van owners pull their window blinds down mainly to stop sunlight bleaching out the upholstery in the van. I understand that the springs in the window blinds do not like being tensioned for long periods of time and are likely to give out.

You pay your money......

Sommersetsun, what your father told you, was the covers about then. In this day and age the materials used now are much better than the ones they used 20yrs ago ie. they are breathable and normally tailored to fit each individual caravan. I haven't got one yet, but will put it on Santa list next month,

best regards, Martin
