We have a Mitsubishi Pajero 2800 diesel LWB automatic which we find great for towing our unit. It has everything we want, it is very comfortable has air con, auto etc, but the only thing that lets it down is its fuel economy. I know it is an automatic and that this and the air con do not lend themselves to economic fuel consumption but does anyone know how we can achieve better than 17/18mpg towing and 24ish mpg solo or is this the norm?
Hi there I have the bighorn 3.1td trooper and I'm getting about the same! As you say these 4x4's are great for towing etc I guess thats the only let down.. But I say what price can you put on safety with towing?

Couldn't agree more with Ben.... We also have a 2.8 Pajero Automatic and do agree that fuel consuption is disappointing but what price do you put on great towing capabilities. If we had cars that towed our vans using 30mpg but were all over the road and felt very unstable ,we wouldn't be long in changing back to the pajero ...I'm sure! We tow a Twin Axle Coachman Laser van weighing 1750kgs with two large dogs, awning, and never have to think about taking'extra's' because the Mitsubishi won't let us down. I have stopped worrying about the Diesel costs as Safety comes first in my book.....Floyd.
Well my friends. I have a Zafira 1.8lt petrol and when towing with my 5 kids and oh in the car i get less then 17 miles to the gallon. Think yourselves lucky!!

I love my Shogun for towing but the low MPG is annoying. It isn't even great when solo. It's a SWB 2.5 and it averaged 21.38 mpg over our holiday, 950 miles of which 750 were towing. Maintenance is high too, it's in the garage now having its brakes looked at for the 3rd time this year and I fear yet another set of discs and pads is on the cards.

Hi Caz, I wouldn't have thoght 21.38 mpg was too bad to be honest...but you don't say if it's diesel or petrol.Ours is a Turbodiesel LWB and does around 25mpg solo and between 16-20 towing depending on road conditions.Sorry to see you are having problems with the brakes though....Mine has been lucky so far, in three years all it's had is routine services and a towbar fitted! Floyd.
My petrol Jazz used to do 35 mpg towing a very heavy folding camper last year, the Shogun only managed about 22 towing that! Shame the caravan is a bit beyond the Jazz's capabilities or Seamus Shogun would be on his way.

Thanks everyone for their comments, looks as though it is about right for the fuel. We did have a Discovery 200Tdi and after that a 300Tdi and both managed 25mpg towing but that was towing an Avondale Dart with a 1300kg max. I think I will try Van Aitken's as they do a fuel pump set up service but it costs about £400, will be worth it though as we love the car!
Thanks again folks
