While reversing my van onto a drive with the stabalizer connected the nylon fitting that holds the spring in place broke.

I am new to towing and wondering if you should release the stabalizer clamp before reversing

Maybe the clamp tightens the stabailzer too much and doesn't allow enough movement?

Any advice appreciated.

Do you know the best place to get a replacement part.

Hi, The answer in no, you shouldn't have to remove the stabiliser bar just to reverse the van. The part I guess has been worn enough to make it break off.....I would suggest you try eBay for these parts. You might be able to get a complete one for around a tenner....Floyd.

Thanks for the reply, I spoke to bulldog technical and they said reversing can be a problem and that is why the part broke.

I was reversing at a tight angle and up an incline.

I use a CORGI stabiliser, same design as a BULLDOG and this summer whilst reversing onto a pitch that was on an incline I dug a small trench with the end of the spring, as it was softish groung I didn't feel it, when I originally purchased the stabilisers the guy told me "don't forget to take it off when you go onto or off a ferry because with the incline it will dig in", obviously a known problem!

MrAB,  I imagine the only way that the nylon guard could be broken off is that, because of the acute angle (tight turn), the blade may have slipped off the nylon and ledged onto the L bracket.   Then, on reversing, the van hitch would be compressed and the weight of the car would have been thrust against the nylon guide via the blade.   If this is the case, you may need to move the bracket on the A frme a bit firther forwards (towards the hitch).

For the Bulldog 200Q and 300Q stabilisers, the instructions for positioning the A frame L bracket are:

Load car and van as normal, and hitch up in a straight line on a level surface. Ensure the hitch is fully forward (as during towing).

Position the L bracket so that the blade protrudes 100mm (4 inches) to the rear of the nylon guide.

Hope this is helpful,  Bertie.
