the front shelf in out 1994 Compass Rallye has cracked up and the grain effect (paint?) has flaked and is falling off, this I think is caused by the sun coming in the front windows

apart from this problem the van is almost immaculate

could I repaint it using paint and grain?

or any other suggestions Please

Spasm as long as you clear all the old paint off, sand it well to provide a good base and follow the manufacturers guidelines there shouldnt be any problems.

Try scraping the surface using a piece of glass in a scrapping fasion to remove the old stuff.

Had to do this to a telephone table belongong to my mam,,,, very similar, scraped it using the flat edge of a piece of glass to remove the old flaking varnish and paint effect. wire wooled the wood with white spirits to raise the grain, applied a buff undercoat and stained and dragged it to reproduce the grain.

Mind I was a painter and decorator,,,,,,, a couple of coats of floor varnish and bobs your fathers brother

I used paint and grain on our (now sold) folding camper.  I filled in the small cracks first with wood filler, sanded it down and then painted it with paint and grain, when that had dried i gave it a coat of matt varnish to protect it further.  Worked very well and certainly made it look much better than the cracks.  I would give it a go, and if that doesn't work you could make one out of very thin ply and paint that instead.

not the same im afraid,the shelf is not wood as such.its what i call conti board thin ply top and bottom and a chip filling.and the grain is printed on to a white or pink background,any sanding will only enlarge the damage as the print is removed.most caravans are made like this,all printed on finish.this includes all the cupboards as well
