Hello All,
Has anyone had to replace the wood under the bottom rail on caravan door step ??? .Because the door top is slightly out from top of caravan, water has got in over the time and rotted out the wood under the step. I have to find out how to do this, so as I can keep the van as long as I can. Van replacement is not an option for me now.
Also, I have to reseal the strips at front of van. The top one will be easy, not so the one holding all the windows. I believe you have to fit windows to the rail and then fit rail back on van. Is this correct, please. Looks like about 6 pairs of hands will be needed. yes.gif .
Van is a 1990 Lunar Clubman 390/2. ( leaky Lunars)
Thanks,
Greg

When we did our windows the rail was attached first then the windows slid on whilst the rail was on the van.  The rail wasn'nt fastened back fully so care was needed but we certainly didn't attach all in one go.  See my homepage for my piccys.

Actually I've just looked at my piccys and there aren't any of the windows going back.  We attached the rail fully in the middle (above middle window) then put the middle window on then we attached it at the sides but loosely so there was some movement when sliding the windows into place.  Just take lots of care.  Hope this makes sense.

Hi Leanne,

Thanks for reply. I see what you meant. Would be really awkward to refit rail with all three windows hanging on it, lol.

Just got to find out how to do the door step now.

                         Thank you,

                                         Greg

We did the door step on our old ABI.  We had to take the side panels off and cut out the old timber first.  Then we measured up what we needed to replace it.  We used South African Idigbo hardwood which is very light but really hard.  It's almost impossible to cut it to shape yourself - we had it machine cut to our specifications.

If your door is slightly out, it is possible that the wood supporting the door has rotted as well.  You need to check this when the side panels are removed.

Hii Folks,

Thanks for replies.   To Fogey:  PLEASE tell me that you mean inner side panels (gulp).  Re-machining, I suppose you could get relative shape by the contours of old frame

To Wizard;  I have that link safely put away thanks, --brilliant-but depressing also. Serves me right for buying a 1990 era caravan--especially a leaky Lunar. My old Robin 450/5 was still dry and solid.W   Will get some new batteries for camera---I think I will need a large reference base, lol.

In general, is it better to show pics as links??. When showing repairs in sequence obviously pics are best.

                             Thanks again,

                                        Greg

Sorry.  It was the external panels (and the awning rail).  Once we got started, it didn't take too long and it wasn't as difficult as we had at first thought.

The wood under the rail had totally rotted away so we measured up as best we could for the replacement piece.  It wasn't 100% perfect but it looked better and definitely felt better when we entered the caravan.  My daughter has the caravan now and it is still holding up nicely.

We didn't take photos unfortunately.  I wish we had.

Hi Anne and Jeff,

I can say only one thing  about outer panel removal;----AAARRRGGGHHHH NO.  This was the side I had resealed back in May.  Ah well, back to the drawing board.    I have got to get van under cover for a job like that.  Thanks for your time

Good luck Greg.

We did it undercover.  I don't think we'd have attempted it otherwise.  (Jeff did most of the work - Anne offered lots of encouragement and praise - knows which side her bread is buttered on  )

Hi Jeff and Anne,

Pat offers me encouragement with gallons of tea as and when I get round to doing things about the house, lol.

When I resealed the one side, was that ever a messy job, was picking mastic out of everywhere around van for ages.

I have to bite the bullet and have a go. Caravan is worthless as it is, and as I didn't pay too much for it, it won't really matter if it doesn't quite get all the nuts and bolts back in same place,.

                              Thanks,

                                        Greg
