Is it a trolley jack, John?  I am trying to visualise what you mean.  To avoid toppling sideways, I would think a trolley jack is better at right angles to the chassis.

It is a trolley jack but if it is at right angles to the chassis then there is a tendency to tip across the width of the jack on a slope(like my drive)

If its in line then its trying to "tip" a much longer length

It looks like this

 hi the trolly jack should only be used under the Axel or directly behind the wheels on the chassis.if you use it under the chassis elsewhere there is a chance of twisting the chassis.john knows this but for those that do not its important.

Thanks Michael I have modified the business end (today!) of the jack with some U=section metal so that one side of the U fits into the existing Alko jack brackets and the chassis sits on the flat centre part of the U section.

This is very steady and almost slip proof

Ah, the penny has dropped.  You meant the jack tipping sideways.  I was thinkiing more along the lines of the caravan slipping sideways.   Looks like you have it sorted, John.

Fortunately, my van is on level ground.  But I have been thinking; if I decide on a side-lift Al-ko jack, it would be possible to utilise the lifting bracket by using my trolley jack when at home.  A wooden block between jack head and bracket would prevent any damage to bracket and/or its protective finish.  Sounds OK?

Agree with Dave 11 & George Mc. The Al-ko heavy duty side Jack seems the best bet for our Coachman. Ordered one today from Al-ko on the strength of the reasoning here. Warranty is so important! Any damage from using inappropriate kit could be expensive warranty wise!

Hope that you get on better with it than I did

I sold mine

I found it very hard to turn and agreed with a poster on another site that you need muscles like Popeye

Its very important to keep the van attached to the car using the Alko jack as Alko recommend as it tips on the small base very easily as I found out when it luckily landed back on the axle stands

It would seem from my using the Alko and the trolley that it would be much easier with the Alko to do damage as its so unstable unattached to the car

It has also been reported that some people have a problem removing the Alko spare wheel carrier when jacking on that side with the Alko

Hope that you are satisfied and don't have any problems

Oh and stock up on spinnach
