All the sat nav systems I have seen have two route options, fastest and shortest. If someone could just make one with the option of most sensible route they would be perfect.

Some sat navs are not reliable . I had one that was sending us on a wild goose chase . Kept trying to make us turn at every junction , stick to map now. http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/classads/forsale/view.asp?ad=6-11-8-13378&subj=Lunar+Mercury+CE+1995

I have one and it's great when not towing and when towing we use a map as well Ours only has fastest and shortest and limited speed we use limited speed and fastest route as this tends to take you down major roads.

Sat Navs, some people love them, some people hate them. I toured France and Spain this summer and while it wasn’t 100% perfect, it was still pretty good and better than using maps. Ours (mio 269+) has a Lorry mode which does try to avoid narrow roads etc. However, it did try to send me down a lane once where I know there is a hump-backed bridge that I would never get over while towing, but I guess that’s not shown on a map either.

I have a Garmin c510d. As with the others I can set it to lorry, motorbike or even taxi to take me down bus lanes(but I havent used that mode ). I haven't had any problems with it yet & I use it everyday for work. I think it's a great piece of kit.

We use the Advent Sat Navigation system ( PC World) - we bought it because it was on offer and had the maps of Europe down to street level.  When travelling with the van behind I always use the lorry setting - this allows for additional time and larger load.

best tip i can offer is to pick the fastest route, no the shortest. then set the speed to 56MPH (lorry speed)  look at what on offer. ( with tomtom you can take bits out, if you can see a problem). in 3 years or running tomtom, in france and spain as well as the UK, i have only ever had 3 problems. hope that helps.
