Hi and Happy New Years to you all! I'm buying a Peugeot 406 from a pal next month. It's complete with towbar, so I fancy caravanning with it. I have in mind to buy a cheapish 2-berth caravan (around £1000) and there seem to be a number of really smart, well-cared-for vans around in the local press. Do you think this is the right road to go down, rather than spending tons more for a mansion on wheels, or am I axing for trouble? I like the look of Lunars, as they seem to be light in weight! Johnny, Manchester

Look around a dealers forecourt, not neccessarily to buy but to see different layouts and what you like and to suit your needs. Then to buy cheaper from adverts in local press.

Hi and welcome, It's tempting to buy something asap, But if you have a good look around and decide what suits you best not the first ones you see you'll find the right van, Obviously look for the dreaded damp on used vans mostly given away by the musty damp smell OR overpowering air fresheners. I agree with you buying a used van first to see if it's something you enjoy and I'd also look in the local ad's for equipment because it's very easy to spend loads on accessories, Don't be afraid to come back here and ask for more advise someone will always be willing to offer advise.

Hi Johnny, we did what you are thinking of doing. We had owned our 406 for a few years, it's the 1.9 td. Suites our needs at the moment. One thing I would say is our van is very light at 665kg laden and is a very stable tow using a blade stabilizer. I think if I towed a van any heavier then I would like a bit more power, maybe the 2.1 td. I feel the 1.9 to be a bit under power, heavy car to start with before you start towing but makes a stable tow. This is just my opinion and thought it may be of some use. Dave.
