Hi welcome to ukcs your in the right place for info.

No you don't need it M.O.T'd it is up to you if you want to have it serviced and my advice would be if you know nothing about vans take someone with you who does before you buy one. Have it seviced before you use it so that you know the electrics, gas brakes tyres etc are safe.

You don't have to have insurance either but it is advisable.

For anything you want to know use the search facility to look in all the posts on the different subjects.

Best of luck once you try it you will be hooked.

Hey charlie welcome to the caravan world!  Well, there is no MOT but it is expected that you will keep your van in good running order because of course if you are towing it on public highways insurance companies will take a very dim view of an accident caused by poor maintenance.  From a health point of view you should get your electrics and gas serviced too to ensure there aren't any leaks or shorts that could poison you or electrocute you.

Beware the dreaded damp, check out everything in the van you are buying, corners, cabinets, under seats absolutely everywhere!

A good tip?  Spend £15 and buy the Haynes caravan manual as it is a wealth of information.  I could type all night and not impart half of the info I have learnt.

Welcome Charlie,i agree with janx if you dont know a thing about caravans take someone with you or get as much information as you can from forums like this one.The saying goes Best to be safe than Sorry. There is much to be considered. We purchased the second van we saw and was very lucky. We got a good secondhand 2 berth clean no damp and a few essential items thrown in and we paid £1500.00.We loved it so much we upgraded again to a secondhand twin axle 4 berth and again we were very lucky .But its not about luck you have to be gutsy ask questions from owners and look inside/outside and underneath and smell is important too, if you have any doubts dont buy it.    Good luck.

Hi charlie, and welcome to UKCS.

Have you asked the dealer if they know the history of the van? They may be able to service it for you, if they haven't already. If there is no available info maybe you could contact the previous owners. If in doubt though, I'd get it serviced.
