We tow with my wife`s Discovery TD5 and recently bought an Elddis Avante 556 with an all up weight of around 1450kg. The van tows great with the Disco which has a noseweight limit around 250kg.

My dilemma is that I am shortly to change my company car and I would like one that would tow the Elddis. Having looked at Volvo V70`s, VW Passats etc the nosewight limits all seem around 75kg which would appear to rule out our van given the recommended ideal noseweight should be around 7% of the total weight ie 100kg!

Any comments, suggestions for a suitable car other than 4x4 option.

Thanks in advance.

Nick

I'm in a similar situation, as far as finding a car which can take 85-100 kgs. noseweight.  The new Passat has a max. of 85Kgs., and my next choice choice appears to be the new Honda CR-V, though I'd prefer to stick with a saloon if I could.

The 7% is an outdated figure now apparently.  Our van is 1300kg MTPLM and 7% would be 91kg, but we tow at 75kg without problems.  The max for most caravan hitches is 100kg, but of course you should never exceed the car manufacturers figure.

Not sure what the kerbweights of the vehicles you are considering are, I would think if you want to stick to the 85% ideal then you will be limited in choice.

7% is not outdated as such it's just becoming impossible to achieve given the ever increasing weight of caravans!!. 85% of the kerbweight of the car is also becoming critical for the same reason.

The whole study that through up this 7% 'guideline' to my mind wants re-examining, there are to many 'ifs' based on what they thought might be the case but had not followed through to find out if they actually did!!

Having said that, 1450kg is a lot of weight which few 'normal' tow cars are going to cope with, unless that it is you can tow it a lot less than fully loaded?

I tow with a VW Touran 1.9 TDI.   Max. trailer weight 1,500kg  Max. nose weight 75kg.    Caravan 1430 kg MTPLM.  No problems.

The VW Sharan has a 2000 kg max. trailer weight, and 100 kg nose weight, but I believe this model is being phased out.   Perhaps it will be replaced by a similar vehicle.

Bertie.

We're in the same boat.

Mr Ulti-mates has a Company Mondeo Estate (kerbweight 1587kg) and maxtow 2000kg.

We've just ordered at van with an MTPLM of 1560kg - so we will be towing at almost 100% - if fully loaded.

We've examined all the stats and looked at (and rejected) running a 4x4.

We're planning to keep our loading as judicious as possible to keep under the MTLPM and to balance out the noseweight as far as possible - by using the gaslight gas bottles for example, carrying the awning in the car and all that sort of stuff.

Mr Ulti-mates, who is a stickler for safety, assures me that our outfit will be safe and stable provided that we excercise best practice.

Incidentally, if you are a member, the Caravan Club has a downloadable pdf showing the towball noseweight limit of most cars on their website - saves you trawling through the manufacturers figures for each model.

With our second row of seats folded, we put the awning poles across the floor of the car, but the awning canvas rides in the rear end bathroom of the van. We manage to keep the nose weight to 70-75 kg. (we aim for 70 kg indicated, because we do not know how accurate the purpose-bought gauge is). The car is 75kg max. to spec'n.

The van is equipped for 2 gas bottles in the front locker.  We carry one (6kg propane), as two would make nose weight unacceptably heavy, even though the spare wheel rides on a carrier behind the axle.

Investigation put us off the Gaslight bottles; cost and limited number of outlets. This may change in the future.

Bertie.

I also have a dilemma - We have a 2009 Kia Sorrento 2.5 ltr - which has a max noseweight of 120 kg. I have just bought an Elddis Avante 550 with the rear bed. I checked the noseweight - it was 130 kg without the bottles in.

I emptied the front locker (not that much in there) and put it under the rear bed. I managed to get the noseweight down to 116 kg. But this means I can't travel with bottles in the front. (Each bottle weighs about 9kg in total) Does anyone else have this problem ?

I have been towing for over 10 years with different caravans and never had one this heavy before.

I am wondering - Has the motor mover made the difference - perhaps if it could be situated behind the wheel instead of in front ? ? ?

Although some movers are as heavy as 35 kg, moving it rear of axle will make hardly any difference to nose weight as it is so close to axle. I have no problem with nose weight of my Swift but in 42 years of caravanning i have never bothered to carry more than one bottle of gas.I always have a full one in my garage and i weigh the bottle on van before each trip.I know after all these years roughly what i will use and if bottle to low, change it with the full one. What is left in the old bottle is then used up on BBQ at home.
I have just looked at the spec of your van and it is lighter than my swift and it states max hitch weight for your van 100kg which is also what Alko state. If your scales are giving you an accurate reading i would be querying wieght with your Elddis dealer.

We tow an adria 542dt and have no issues getting nose weight to 90kg with two gas bottles and spare wheel in front locker. Awning and all heavy items on the floor over the axle. We don't load food into cupboards till we get there as they are all forward of axle. Aquaroll and wastemaster go in rear bathroom.

Our car has a max of 120kg nose weight but I think alko chassis is only 100 anyway ?

as birdman says the mover cant make much of a difference because it too close to the axle.. at most 10% of the mover weight will be added to the nose weight..

my van carries two kg gas bottles total weight just over 30 kg full and a spare wheel in the gas locker at the front.. at guess i have maybe 50 kg in my gas locker with a few blocks of wood and other bits..

but its an end kitchen and what with the water i carry all at the rear this takes weight off the nose but i still end up with close to 90 kg on the hitch..

i cant help but feel the caravans are getting too big and heavy for the cars that people want to tow them with..

adding payload weight at the rear isnt a good idea but i think its what a lot of people end up doing..

The diesel CRV Honda 2.2 is a great towcar and pulls our Elddis 462 like a dream, 100kg noseweight, and returns about 35mpg towing. If l had to pick a downside, l would say that its lack of incabin storage space compared to our old Civic, and plastics that are fairly soft and easily scuffable being used on its interior trim would be its downfall, but otherwise mechanically sound. Some of the gizmos like a lot of modern cars are gimmicy and sometimes a real pain, such as the tyre pressure warning light showing on long journeys when the tyres get hot, and needing a bit of a techy minded person to reset the fault light every time, although Honda have now promised a softwear update to cure this problem which is due for recall of all 2012 onwards CRVs in September this year.

Caravans are becoming heavier while cars are becoming lighter. Soon we'll need Discos to tow any 'van.

My 2014 Merc estate weighs 1665 kg which is 1415kg at 85%. My caravan, way at the light end of the range, is 1408kg. The new 2015 model Merc C Class is 50+kg lighter, so it's braked tow max of1800 is practically meaningless and I'd be unhappy to tow my Swift with one.

I like Mercs but to upgrade to an E Class is a lot of £££ extra, so it's fork out in a couple of years, get a 4x4 or fill the 'van with helium

PS - it's also a pain keeping the nose weight right.
