Most awnings are attached by screws, although some older 'vans have nails/staples. I would drill fresh holes in the rail rather than screwing the awning back into the original holes as i doubt you would get a good 'grip' on the screws seeing as they were 'ripped out'
Remember to apply a good quality sealant before re-screwing the rail on. See Here for quality sealants at great prices. (the mastic on a roll is my own personal preference).
