Hi all, I know that there has been previous posts about the same subject but by the time you get to read them all, you feel like bouncing your head off a wall as there seems so many companys. Firstly, I'm off to the south of France in the summer for the first time and I will be needing European breakdown cover to cover the car and caravan. Now, will I be better off just getting cover for the 3 weeks or will It be cheaper getting cover for the whole year. My current policy with Mayday expires in May 2007. Also, can anyone recommend a certain company that is reasonably priced. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi

I use CC Red Pennant every year

I've never needed it but the thought of an english speaking voice on the end of the (freephone) telephone 24/7 helping me out is real "Piece of Mind"

I normally use it all year round because we go to France/Spain early summer and late summer and the annual package is cheaper but I can't understand why you're bringing Mayday into it.

I use Mayday for all year protection in the UK and Red Pennant for the holidays

Be aware that many breakdown companies do NOT cover you if tou are towing. I found this the hard way with the RAC. Just joined Mayday and found them very competitive and the cover is far superior to that of the RAC too. They also cover you following an accident which neither the AA or RAC do. I would therefore recommend Mayday to anyone.

Britania rescue, Deluxe cover. Probably the cheapest cover out there, much cheaper than mayday who in my opinion are wrong to charge so much for one off trips. Britania cover you abroad on deluxe cover, and all you have to do is ring them and tell them your going a week berofe. Works very well for us in our motorhome as we are covered in our cars as wel.

Tyreman, I'm not having a go at Mayday, don't worry about that. What I am wondering is, are there any companies out there that do the usual Uk breakdown with Europe as an add on which could possibly work out cheaper than having to take seperate europe cover from another company ontop of having your Mayday Uk cover. Am I right in saying that Mayday don't do Europe cover? If it means keeping Mayday going and taking seperated cover out for Europe, then so be it. Has anyone had any bad experiences abroad with breakdown companies?

C&CC's Arrival (UK recovery) costs £138 per annum.   You can add annual European cover to this for around £80, making it £213. This compares to around £300 for CC's Mayday + Red Pennant, and as far as I can see, the cover is pretty well the same.

. Has anyone had any bad experiences abroad with breakdown companies?

yes, broke down in the middle of Avignon in rush hour, accelerator cable snapped in the middle of a busy junction, (guess who didnt carry a spare)4 hours wait to be rescued after many expensive phone calls to the call centre of  the recovery firm.Vehicle couldnt be repaired at roadside had to go on the back of a flatbed truck with us still in the car,(scary) took us through the city and way out into the sticks to garage for repair.cant fault the repair guy, did it straight away , now 9pm , broke down at 4pm in sweltering heat.

complained about the 4hour delay and getting fobbed off on the phone by letter and got a full refund of the 2 weeks cover.

real eye opener , beware cheap cover especially if you have to spend £30 in phone calls getting through to call centre !!!!!

lesson learned. hence Red pennant from now on

The C&CC's Arrival scheme is actually run by the RAC, so if you use that, you get full cover for your car, in the normal way, but also caravan cover. This includes problems when you are on the road, and they will even come to a campsite if a problem occurs there. We have used it for many years, at home and abroad, and cannot speak highly enough of it. It may not be the cheapest option, but I would venture to say that it is the best.

Hi Degstroy

I can't comment on the C&CC package as I'm not a member but suggest it's well worth reading the small print and if that's comparable with Red Pennant and backed by C&CC members good experiences using it then "go for it"

Greetings All,

We're with 'More Than' which is owned now by Royal Sunn Alliance.

Last year they covered  our car with a fully comprehensive package of benefits with European cover thrown in without charge. Cost us about £55 and they provide a British telephone call centre. The only thing that isnt covered is a caravan breakdown. Short of rolling the van, I cant say Ive ever seen a van breakdown (please dont mention changing a wheel)

Hi emmitdb

It's very difficult to compare packages bedause unlike "More Than" the CC Red Pennant covers the car and caravan including recovery to the UK as well as all the illness, accident and continuation of holiday insurance (like supplying a tow car in the event of yours breaking down and being unrepairable in a reasonable time span or the use of hotels etc)

Having had some experience in the industry i know quite a bit that goes on.....

Contrary to what Soundsdigital posted "They also cover you following an accident which neither the AA or RAC do" the companies do, the problem is that they cannot make the decisions re the vh as its an insurance matter.  With regards to helping you get home or continuing your journey in a rental car they will indeed carry on to cover as normal.

Also you have to expect to spend money on phone calls, these companies provide a free number but you have to be prepared to call from a landline and give up on your mobile.

All i can say is expect delays either way - if your vehicle/caravan breaks down its inevitable no matter what these companies do to help that you will be delayed.  And always read the terms and conditions of your cover, quite often you will find yourselves being caught out because you didnt read the info before leaving on hols.... Hope this helps.

My sister was with the AA and called them to recover her following an accident. They did, but sent her a bill for it.
