Lobey, the term 'Fifth Wheel' refers to the turntable on the tractor, the trailer is still a trailer and termed a 'Semi trailer'. Absolutelly illegal in UK unless on a 'Showmans Licence'.  Mick
I stand corrected.

No such thing as a "showman's licence". Amazingly, these units are classed as "restricted use vehicles". If you check an ordinary driving licence, you are entitled to drive these with absolutely nothing more than an ordinary car licence regardless of their size and weight. (vehicle category N.) The restriction being that they can only travel from A to B (fair to fair or fair to storage) and can only be used to transport the goods they were built to carry.

They are also licenced as "Shownan's tractors and trailers" and as such only pay the same road tax as an agricultural tractor. They are also MOT exempt and do not need a tachograph or goods vehicle operators licence.

I speak from experience, I am related to a showman's family and have used some of the priveliges granted to them myself.

I am told that the same ruling applies to these multi-wheeled mobile cranes, IE, they can be driven on a car licence.

That's right. They are also restricted use vehicles.
