Hi,

Following inspiration from this forum we have just begun to renovate a very damp caravan we have been given, we are okay at DIY but have never owned a caravan.

We have removed all the fixtures from the front end as this was the worst and door area/window areas the ply is wet through and falls away very easily.

I just wanted to ask do you have any tips for removing the dry ply in places, this is stuck fast and we are having a hard job removing without damaging polystyrene.

Thanks Lee

Just had a good look at the damp sites( thanks), just trying to work out if you need to remove all the ply or just the damp, dry out, then ply over the whole lot.  Will windows and doors fit then??.

Also noticing some people remove polystyrene, some don't, is there a best way!!.

Our polystrene has a layer of thick yellow hard glue between the polystyrene and then the ply wood.

Should we do all the seals on the outside first.

Sorry for all the questions - real newbie.

Thanks

Hi there and welcome to UKCS.

The polystyrene is often glued in and stuck fast, so attempting to remove it will just result breaking it in pieces, it is not essential removing it if you can get at and check the surrounding wooden framing for rot. I would reseal the rails on the ouside first (as long as the wooden frame that the rail screws into is not rotten, if it is then replace this first), when you have re-sealed the outside you can concentrate on the inside.
I would remove all of the boarding you can in the affected area, and the dry solid pieces level off with a spirit level and stanley knife so that new boarding will sit tight up against it with only the slightest of visible joins, the wallpaper/paint will cover the join.
That's how i would do it anyway.

Hope that helps a little.

Hi Lee , welcome to UKCS , i used a wallpaper scraper to remove some of the dry ply , just slid ( hammered ) it between the ply and the polystyrene , your bound to damage the surface of the polystyrene at some point , don't worry to much as you'll be slapping a load of mastic on the polystyrene when you come to replace the wall board .
Feel free to ask as many questions as you like we ( The Fixed it Club ) are here to advise you , when you need us .

If you need to remove good ply then cut it into 40mm wide strips with a stanley knife. these strips will then peel away with the help of a sharp kitchen knife, done this way you should do little or no damage to the insulation.
