Hi everyone,

We have just bought our first touring caravan which is  a 1993 Craftsman Miracle 154.

It came with the original handbook and loads of other instructions but nowhere does it tell you  what the correct tyre pressures should be.

Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Thanks

Trev

Have a look on the tyre itself this will probably give you the maximum PSI less a few PSI as they may not be the originals that were supplied. If they are the originals change them they are dangerous.

Trev,

Chalkie56 has a point.  The link you were given above is just one link many people could give you and i guarantee other links would advise differant tyre pressures.  Don't take one link as gospel, my advice is this:

1) Do what Chalkie56 says and look on your tyre wall to see what that says as max PSI.  And if they are the original tyres from your 1993 Caravan get then swapped for new ones asap.

2) Go on the net and look up your tyres, you will get differant figures from differant sites, choose a PSI which is an average based on your findings and the weight you are towing from lots of site recommendations, better still search for your handbook online if you dont have it in paper format.

Why well because the link above says mine should be 32PSI which is a load of you know what  mine should be 36 PSI and my max PSI for each tyre is 42.  The link also states between 1995 to 2003 and your caravan is a 1993.

HTH Mick

Very glaring mistake there. In the example it states:

"Eg: 84T The maximum load for this tyre is 500KGs at 118mph(see chart below) x 2 (number of tyres on single axle caravan) = 1000KGs total permissible weight"

Now using the charts provided I get the following:

According to the first chart LI 84 = 800KG per tyre (84/800), giving 1600KG permissible weight.

Will email them to point out the error.

Does anyone have an email address?

better off asking them to remove the whole page as its all very miss-interpretable and it would be best if they link to another website in my honest opinion.

Thanks for the advice. I would say that the tyres are not the originals. The tread and sidewalls are in good condition with no cracks or signs of deterioration.

I'll do what you say and start trawling the interenet.

Cheers

Hi Trev,

I have a 154, but it lacks all of its documentation. Any chance of a copy of your manual please? You can email me direct...

Bit surprised at some of the answers here, the maximum weight a tyre can carry and at what pressure as written on the side wall is useful information but it's not 'less a bit' ???

First though the age of the tyres, this is also on the side of the tyre after 'DOT', should be four digits last two being the year, pre 2000 might be three digits but if thats the case their already to old to continue using them. Caravan tyres don't get a lot of use and don't then wear out, however they do get old and cracks can appear if not changed after no more than seven and the recommendation is five

Your van weighed 808kg empty when made so probably about 1000kg loaded, your tyres then need to be able to carry 500kg each. However the general advice is to go 10% above so 550kg each, this equates to a tyre with a load index number of 87 (545kg) or above.

Once the correct pair of tyres are fitted, then the correct pressure can be calculated, this is based on the maximum weight and pressure printed on the side walls and the actual maximum weight of the van, the equation is

weight of van times a single tyre pressure divided by total weight tyres can carry.

I only know one tyres figures so based on that, a 175x13 8ply, load index 97 or 730kg at 65psi, your vans tyre pressures assuming it is 1000kg would be,

1000kg x 65 / 1460 = 44.5 or for round figures 45psi

Just checked two or three against the list that Big Scot put the link up for and for the Thomson Caravans I chose to check they where all spot on. Hope that helps.
