Latest update announced this week on improvements being made to Billing Aquadrome.
Gold medalist could build new ice rink
GOLD medal winning ice skater Robin Cousins could be drafted in to build an ice rink at Billing Aquadrome.
The holiday park's owners are planning to build a rink as part of the multi-million-pound redevelopment of the venue. The rink would be almost 100 feet long and feature at the park every winter. Park manager Paul Mackaness said the plans were still in their very early stages and pointed out that Robin Cousin's company, Cousins Entertainment, was only one of the businesses being considered to build the rink. He said: "We're planning on building an ice rink and we'd have a whole host of different events on it. "We'd only have it there in the winter but it would be undercover and I think it would work quite well for us. "But we're still in the very early stages of planning it and Robin Cousins' firm is just one of the companies we're considering." The major developments planned for the park will be based around a new area called the Boardwalk which will be based on a New England theme. The area will also feature a family entertainment centre, a sports bar, climbing zone, food hall and health, fitness and beauty facilities. After Northampton Borough Council's planning committee gave the scheme planning permission this week the company hopes work can start on site in the next few weeks. Mr Mackaness said: "This will be something spectacular which gives everyone who uses the park a wonderful time. "It was always our intention to develop facilities to enhance the Billing experience and we feel we have achieved that objective with this new leisure and entertainment complex." Billing Aquadrome currently attracts about a million visitors a year. The venue, which has 235 acres of parkland, has been open for 60 years. It is hoped the expansion plans could create up to 200 new jobs.
